It is just one citation -- a unique and valuable letter about the early Western expansion -- no other citations. Did you bother to read it? So -- you want it out altogether? Don't tag it -- like some authority from above -- unless you have some constructive statements to make. Comments and discussion are important in creating the encyclopedia. - I think the article would be better if the quotations were integrated into the article; I guess the wikify tag isn't necessary , although the article has a lot of room for improvement in my opinion, and I will remove it now. The letter would do well in wikisource or something, in my opinion, but wikipedia artilces aren't really for whole letters, but it is relevant to the article and we can leave it until it is integrated. - I do think the article needs improvement -- it's just a stub after all and more information about Spaulding is needed. He is referenced in most Idaho history texts and I'm looking for other sources. But, the citation is unique and quite comprehensive. Spaulding's wife also wrote some letters on the trail, but they were focused more on people than geography and exploring. Only a few other letters from this pioneering party are available. The best "Wiki way" would probably be a very careful edit of the letter, selecting things that the reader would find most useful, with cross references to other western explorers and travelers. That would take a significant amount of research, and would probably include files not available on the internet. If we make a list here of things in the letter that would be particularly relevant (like members of the party, route, and contact with indigenous people), that would be a good start.
- As to the tag, well, wiki tagging in general annoys me, I'm afraid. Tags point out problems, but don't express a willingness to share the work on them. That seems both aggressive and lazy. I avoid them whenever I can by using the talk pages a lot!! But, I'm not projecting those intentions on you at all. I've also been talking with a couple of other history types on the related Marcus Whitman, Whitman Massacre, and Cayuse War pages. Those articles are also short, but are coming along. - I guess Carabinieri forgot to remove the tag. I wikified the article further, though not the letter, and removed the tag. Tags are very useful, in my opinion. You can use them to alert others that there is a problem when you don't have the time or skill to do it yourself. Also, I agree with Carabinieri that the letter should be removed. It seems inappropriate to have the whole letter posted as it is. -- Kjkolb 04:47, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
