Adjectives edit

As per consensus amongst various guidelines (e.g. [[WP:PEA), if sources use terms which without attribution would be considered puffery, then they can, and some might argue, should be used. The only term which might still be under consideration is "pioneer", which he clearly was. When someone does something, or is one of a group which does something, they are considered pioneers. That's not puffery. That's simple English grammar. Onel5969 TT me 02:57, 9 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

I recently removed this term and also reverted when logged out; sorry about not being logged in when I did so. I see that this has been a bone of contention on the page for some time. As I noted in the edit summary, WP:V applies to this term, which I take to be WP:PEACOCK; that someone is a pioneer is a value judgment and not a matter of fact. We can attribute statements to people who called him a pioneer, but it's not justifiable merely to anoint him a pioneer, and that must be backed with appropriate sourcing. Hi. Pioneer: "a person or group that originates or helps open up a new line of thought or activity or a new method or technical development". Being the first cinematographer at two two major film studios, which is cited, definitely qualifies as a pioneer. It's not subjective, but an accurate description. Describing him as the first cinematographer at two early film studios is a neutral description that is entirely appropriate to put in the lede. It does the actual work of explaining what you mean by "pioneer" without using the value-laden term. Chubbles (talk) 23:34, 20 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
