- There are standardized forms of botanist's names that are cited (in some circumstances) along with the name of plants described by that person. "Miconia brevitheca Gleason" indicates that Gleason described that species. In Gleason's case, the "abbreviation" is his full last name, but in many cases, the name truly is abbreviated: L., Sm., R.Br., etc. Plantdrew (talk) 21:48, 17 August 2015 (UTC)
