I plan to edit and add more evidence of Dias' leadership as a military leader and the effect his leadership had on Colonial Brazil and how Dias effected the Portuguese viewed Afro-Brazilians. I have found a handful of sources which I will cite below but I am open to any other sources you all might suggest!    Russell-Wood, A. J. R. "Ambivalent Authorities: The African and Afro-Brazilian Contribution to Local Governance in Colonial Brazil." The Americas 57, no. 1 (2000): 13-36. http://www.jstor.org/stable/1007710. Jose Ant6nio Gonqalves de Mello, Henrique Dias. Governador dos pretos, crioulos, e mulattos no Estado do Brasil, (Recife, 1954). Francis A. Dutra, "A Hard Fought Struggle. Manuel Gonqalves Doria, First Afro-Brazilian to Become a Knight of Santiago," The Americas 56:1 (July 1999), 91-113.
