1601? edit

That canvas, from c.1600, depicts a sea battle between the English and the Spaniards in August 1588. It's the attack of the English fireships on the Spanish Armada off Calais and the ensuing battle of Gravelines. There are English fireships in the middle distance -they have missed their target-, and in the foreground Medina Sidonia's flagship, flying what seems to be a Burgundian red ragged saltire with the royal crest, is exchanging broadsides to port and starboard with English vessels flying the red cross of St George and a white ensign with the English royal crest. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.142.175.22 (talk) 10:02, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Vlissingen edit

Known in English as Flushing (and in Spanish as Flesinga). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.142.175.22 (talk) 10:05, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Authorship of "The battle of Gibraltar" edit

It seems that the author of this painting was Van Wieringen rather than Vroom. The latter was commissioned for the job, but he asked for a stunning wage and eventually other artist was responsible for the painting.

Indeed, and I have removed that image from the gallery. See http://www.sailingwarship.com/the-explosion-of-the-spanish-flagship-in-the-battle-of-gibraltar-april-25th-1607-by-cornelis-claesz-van-wieringen.html 192.35.35.36 (talk) 03:46, 13 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
