So is it square kilometers or miles?

reverted edit by Inuit18 edit

I have reverted an edit by Inuit18. The wikipedian added Persian: هیرمند to the article, however he/she fails to provide a single reliable and valid source which uses هیرمند when referring to the province. Whether it is in Pashto, English or Dari/Farsi, the province is written as Helmand/هلمند. For those who can't read Arabic script, هیرمند in English is written as "Heermand". (Ketabtoon (talk) 05:47, 19 September 2009 (UTC))Reply

Helmand is the Pashtunized version or Heermand. Heermand has been used in Persian literature and it is used by the media. Here is a source that legitimizes my claim.

http://www.mibosearch.com/Dictionary.aspx?wId=339960&DicName=dehkhoda&word=هيرمند

Dehkhuda gives a few examples from Ferdowsi and Farukhi, two famous Persian poets.--Inuit18 (talk) 19:02, 19 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Farsi Wikipedia [1]
Wakht News [2]
Afghan Embassy in Canada [3]
VOA-Dari [4]
BBC Farsi [5]
JEMB - Afghanistan [6]
^^ Are some of the well known Dari/Farsi sources and they all use هلمند. Government of Afghanistan, Afghan Media, International Media, Authors etc all use هلمند. This is an encyclopedia, and please follow the rules. The name of the province is Helmand/هلمند in all languages. There is no such thing as Heeramnd/هیرمند so please stop vandalising the topic, otherwise you will be reported. Thank you. (Ketabtoon (talk) 20:03, 19 September 2009 (UTC))Reply
PS: No one is interested in your Pashtunization theories. Publish them in your web log. (Ketabtoon (talk) 20:04, 19 September 2009 (UTC))Reply
Ketabtoon, I am sure you are right, but it doesn't seem the cause for that great of a dispute, to abandon the good faith we should all have. 70.105.36.175 (talk) 20:10, 19 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
The problem is not with good faith edits, but ethnic POV edits. If you look at Inuit18's edit history, you will notice that he/she is always pushing ethnic POV material (pro Tajik/Iranian and anti-Pashtun). Right now the discussion is about adding (Persian: هیرمند) to the article. What exactly is هیرمند ? Can the Wikipedian find a single reliable source which uses the word هیرمند when referring to Helmand Province? Even if the user can find 1 or 2 sources, Helmand/هلمند is used by majority of Dari/Farsi/Persian sources.
Wikipedia is not a place for Tajik and Iranian nationalists to promote their theories like "Pashtunization" or "Pashtun Mafia". Thank you for your contribution. (Ketabtoon (talk) 21:44, 19 September 2009 (UTC))Reply

This is nothing close to POV. I know you are trying hard to get me banned but what is your proof that I am pushing for nationalistic ideals. I clearly posted a page from Dehkhuda's dictionary the most reliable Persian dictionary in the world. Helmand is not a historic term and it came from Heermand.

Here is Dehkhuda foundation's official website: http://www.loghatnaameh.com/dehkhodaworddetail-80b337db05404df2bc38cde6906cb367-fa.html --Inuit18 (talk) 05:49, 20 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Here is a BBC article using Heermand: http://www.bbc.co.uk/persian/afghanistan/2009/01/090126_a-afghan-iran-hirmand.shtml and here is another one http://www.bbc.co.uk/persian/afghanistan/2009/06/090601_dn_books_hermand.shtml --Inuit18 (talk) 05:53, 20 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Did you read the articles or you just googled هیرمند and copy+pasted the links here? Because the sources are not referring to Helmand Province, but Helmand River (رود هیرمند). Names and boundaries of regions change as time passes by. There was no such thing as Pakistan 60 years ago but now there is. There was no such thing as Daikundi Province, but now there is. Are you going to add Aryana in the brackets for Afghanistan just because once upon a time the name of that region was Aryana?
As I mentioned before, Helmand/هلمند is the only word used in Dari/Farsi/Persian writings when referring to Helmand Province. You should settle the issue here before re-adding (Persian: هیرمند) to the article. (Ketabtoon (talk) 06:12, 20 September 2009 (UTC))Reply

So are you telling me that Heermand is not related to Helmand? Heermand and Helmand is used by Persian speakers but the correct way is Heermand and most dictionaries have it as Heermand not Helmand. Heermand is used for the river and the modern province of Helmand is named after this river so any term used for the river should be used for the province. This was not vandalism but an edit backed by sources. since I have presented by sources there is no reason for you to remove Persian. Also why are you removing Persian here while you add Pashto on other pages like Badghis and Qunduz (two non-pashtu words). This proves that it is you who is making the ethnic POV edits not me.--Inuit18 (talk) 06:18, 20 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Population? edit

The population figure of 1,441,769 is given, and said to be from 2010. However, past revisions of the page going back well into 2009 give the same figure. The source claims to be an update as of May 2010, but the population figure for most of 2009 is identical. Are we expected to believe that, out of over 1.4 million people, there was not a single change in population over the course of an entire year? I'd just change the date, but then I'd have to change the source back to its 2009 version. Maybe we could make a note about this?

Opium production edit

This is poorly stated : "Helmand is believed to be one of the world's largest opium-producing regions, responsible for around 80% of the world's total production.[4][5] This is believed to be more than the whole of Burma, which is the second largest producing nation after Afghanistan. " IF Helmand yields 80% of the world product, the entire rest of the world is only 20% - so there is NO comparably "large" region to be "one of." How relevant is Burma? Goggling yields different estimate of the ranking of various countries. The references [4][5] are not authoritative.

Location of Camp Bastion/Leatherneck edit

The article states that the U.S. Camp Leatherneck and the British Camp Bastion are southwest of the capital Lashkar Gah, but the interactive Wiki map on the page shows that they are northwest of the capital. Which is correct?

so called "unnecessary" and "disruptive" edits edit

about the politics and government section:

The current Governor of the province is Mirza Khan Rahimi.[1] The city of Lashkar Gah is the capital of Helmand province. All law enforcement activities throughout the province are controlled by the Afghan National Police (ANP). Helmand's border with neighboring Balochistan province of Pakistan is monitored and protected by the Afghan Border Police (ABP), which is part of the ANP. The border is called the Durand Line and is known to be one of the most dangerous in the world due to heavy militant activities and illegal smugglings. A provincial Police Chief is assigned to lead both the ANP. The Police Chief represents the Ministry of the Interior in Kabul. The ANP is backed by other Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), including the NATO-led forces.

on what basis do you judge my edits specifying the illegal smugglings going into pakistan from afghanistan being "unnecessary" and "disruptive"?

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-03-19/afghans-turn-to-smugglers-as-pakistan-terror-spat-locks-border

read the above articles for the evidence

"The border is called the Durand Line and is known to be one of the most dangerous in the world due to heavy militant activities and illegal smugglings" known by whom? no source provided so this should be deleted too, right? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gangadesh721 (talkcontribs) 07:59, 25 June 2018 (UTC) @Adamgerber80Reply

@Gangadesh721: I have added a reference for that sentence. Also, what you are indulging is termed WP:POV. Cross-border smuggling on the Durand Line is a two way street and there are many sources out there which do state that smuggling also happens from Pakistan into Afghanistan. I am mentioning a few for your reference ([7],[8]). Adamgerber80 (talk) 06:13, 27 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Numbers of Districts edit
