A film far ahead of it's time edit

This film is full of ideas later used in other comedy films. I can only think right now of Mel Brooks, Woody Allen and the Monty Python, but I am sure a lot more have taken ideas from it. Worth mentioning, by someone who has seen the film somewhat more recently than me. Hoverfish 20:16, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

If you want to see a reference to ideas used by later films check out the Comedy section of IMDb! Airplane, Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, you name it. Maybe 30 or 40 years ahead of the game.

BTW, there is a new digitally remastered version available on DVD.

Split? edit

Should the Film article be split off from the musical article? -- Ssilvers 07:21, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

DVD edit

...as of late 2006 there has been no legitimate DVD edition.

Does this mean Amazon sells pirated material? -- megA 22:02, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

No apostrophe in the Broadway production of Hellzapoppin edit

While there is an apostrophe in the movie version of Hellzapoppin', I don't believe there is an apostrophe in either the Olsen and Johnson's original Broadway production of Hellzapoppin or the Jerry Lewis revival in 1976.

The suggestion was made to me to provide reliable evidence that there isn't an apostrophe in the musical version of Hellzapoppin.
There is no apostrophe in Hellzapoppin on (1) the window card:

(2) On the souvenir program:

(4) On a Boston street poster:

As I understand it, if no one disagrees that the Hellzapoppin musical shouldn't end with an apostrophe, someone (I'm not sure who) will move the page to the correct title. Brad Smith (talk) 21:25, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

¶ Famous Broadway producer Alexander H. Cohen attempted a revival/updating of Hellzapoppin in 1967, starring Soupy Sales, which promptly closed down in Montreal. Then in 1977 he attempt another revival starring Jerry Lewis and Lynn Redgrave, which closed down in Boston without ever reaching Broadway. [NY Times, April 23, 2000, obit of Alexander H. Cohen]. One reason for the failure of the Jerry Lewis version was Lewis's tempermental and unccoperative behavior - he took an intense dislike to Lynn Redgrave and refused to rehearse with her. One example of the updating of the show was that Redgrave had a skit where she portrayed a call-girl now very well paid by upper crust clients who grieves at the absence of her blue collar former patrons with the song "I Miss the Gang I Used to Bang." Meaning? edit

I assume that "Hellzapoppin" means something, yes? 206.130.136.162 (talk) 08:27, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

It's a phonetic representation of the phrase "Hell's a-poppin'", meaning something like "All Hell is breaking loose". - Nunh-huh 13:48, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
