Anti-BNP protests

edit

I keep adding the text about the protests against the BNP and it keeps getting removed. I too am a resident, and I know for a fact that there were protests outside the town hall. This is backed up by source material. Please don't remove this information, unless you have a reason against it being there other than not knowing that it happened. --Sanguinus 01:03, 14 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yes and the liberals went round saying "vote for us or you are a racist" I have no doubt some people voted BNP just to teach these arrogant politicians a lesson. Incidently Heckmondwike doesn't have a town hall which shows how much the incomer knows about the Town. When it was an urban district it had offices opposite what is now the sorting office.

Please read the source material I provided a link to before you imply that I'm making things up. The relevant line: At the end of a tense count at Batley Town Hall the results were announced in alphabetical order. / As the BNP party had arrived at the town hall earlier in the evening, anti-racist campaigners and protesters with placards greeted them with chants as a line of police kept a close eye on proceedings. --Sanguinus 08:37, 28 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

So the protest was in Batley not Heckmondwike. Thank you for confirming what I said. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Webspit (talk • contribs) 16:02, 11 December 2005.

Heh, right. So what claim you said is right (though your heavy implication has been disproven), and we agree the protests took place and that they deserve to be mentioned. Thanks. Also, please sign your comments. --Sanguinus 15:12, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

If there was a protest it was only among the political classes who quite frankly are not something I take notice of - given that they couldn't even bother protesting in the right town I would guess they were just looking for a photo-op. --Webspit 15:25, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

The count took place at Batley town hall. Given this, why on Earth would they protest elsewhere? If the count had taken place in Heckmondwike, the protest would've taken place there. Regardless of whether you take notice of protests amongst the "political classes", it clearly merits coverage in the article on the town. --Sanguinus 15:27, 11 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

All it merits is the comment that the political fools that are the labour, conservative and liberals parties would rather see the BNP win than stand down so an anti-BNP candidate can stand - which in my view makes them entirely responsible for both the BNP victories (we kow have Exley and the bone-idle Woger Woberts). I think you're right that the three main parties were responsible for the election of Roger Roberts. --Sanguinus 06:01, 28 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Heckmondwike Grammar School

edit

This is one of the most prominent features of the town. Should something more be made of it? NMO

Heckmondwike Choral Society

edit

It would be appreciated if anybody can assist with some history on Heckmondwike choral society particularly from 1800-1900. It is for a project I am doing. Any useful links would be helpful. Many Thanks

Sue, I'm sure this isn't the best place to post your query. Did you try searching the web? Have a look at http://www.divancentre.co.uk/aboutus.aspx 86.163.28.90 (talk) 19:57, 1 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Famous Ex-Residents

edit

I've let the fact that Jim Davidson, Paul Oakenfold and Rod Jane and Freddy lived in the town stand, but added a 'citation needed'. The only evidence that I can find that Rod Jane and Freddy lived there is taken from http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=13978784311&topic=4888 which also suggests Rod died in 1995, which doesn't appear to be right according to http://www.facebook.com/rodjaneandfreddy?v=app_7146470109

Similarly, there is the suggestion that Jim Davidson dated Jane Beaumont, who did live in Heckmondwike, but there'sno evidence that I can find that he lived there. http://archive.cravenherald.co.uk/2000/2/26/156174.html

Paul Oakenfold - can't find anything relevant. 86.163.28.90 (talk) 19:55, 1 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Football club

edit

Heckmondwike FC participated in the Midland League for the season 1914-15, competing against other teams like Halifax Town, Rotherham Town, Chesterfield, etc that went on to join the Football League. Maybe this is something worth adding. If so, search for 'Heckmondwyke' on http://www.rsssf.com/tablese/engmidlandhist.html#clubs —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.20.146.18 (talk) 13:28, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
