Removal of off-topic content edit

@Lobsterthermidor: Much of this article seems to relate to the history of the Grey family, and does not relate to the castle. Articles on subject X should not, generally, be about subject Y, even if there is a relationship between X and Y. May I gently suggest this extraneous content be removed, perhaps to a new article on the family?

Neither is there good cause for a huge copyvio from The Journal; it kinda seems like you coudn't be bothered to describe the contemporary estate, and decided instead to requisition someone else's copyright work to fill the gap. That is decidedly not how it works.

I'm happy to make the necessary changes but thought to give you an opportunity first. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:02, 27 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, the main reason this estate (that's what I was writing about, not a building, as is very common in the literature generally) is mentioned in history is due to having been a seat of a branch of the (very complex) and prominent Grey family, which covered many centuries, held dozens of titles and occupied dozens of houses. If anyone wants to write an article on the bricks and mortar alone, it will be very short and of interest to few. Families are generally categorised by genealogists by their seat, thus "Grey of Heaton", and the article is really about the descent of Heaton in the Grey family. It would be impossible to write an article "The Grey Family" without splitting it up into chapters/sections on each branch, defined by seat. Exactly what I have done here. Often they bore different coats of arms and probably one branch had not spoken to another for a few centuries. I frequently come against this misunderstanding during my career at Wikipedia, it's nothing new. If you want to split it out into a new article "Manor of Heaton" dedicated solely to the descent of the manor, you could do that if you feel strongly enough about it. But it will leave a rump article on the bricks and mortar which as I say are of little interest stripped of association with their illustrious occupants. As for the quote from "The Journal", it's fully sourced, but if you like I will state the source on the face of the article. A quotation is not necessarily a copyvio. I like using estate agent quotes verbatim because they are sometimes quite flowery and interestingly written and opinionated, (i.e. "this house has a superb great hall") which is something WP contributors can't do as it's borderline pov. Not because I'm lazy, if I were that I wouldn't bother contributing to WP! But if you want to re-phrase it in duller language, go ahead.Lobsterthermidor (talk) 16:19, 5 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
