All of the actual evidence shows that this was a completely innocent tree standing next to a farm house.

The stories may be titillating, but they're fake - probably made up at the beginning of the tourist era, in the late 1800s.

The extensive report by Joan H. Geismar cited in the article says there are only 2 newspaper account of the hanging: 1. that it was at Potter's Field, and 2. that it was near Potter's Field.
