Ethnicity and Languages edit

Hammasa Kohistani is an ethnic Tajik from Panjsher, Afghanistan - a region which is also known as "Kohistan". In the past, the expression "Kohistani" used to be a synonym for Tajiks, like in the case of Amir Habibullah Kalakani (also know as "Bacha-i-Saqao") and his "Kohistani reign":

  • "... Habibullah Kalakani (also known as Bacha Saqqao, the Tajik warlord of Kohistan) drove Amanullah from the throne and ruled Kabul for 10 months. In late 1929 Habibullah was defeated and executed by a Pushtun tribal army led by the former commander of Amanullah's army, Mohammad Nadir Shah, who subsequently became king (1929-1933) ..."

Taken from the "Online Ecyclopaedia":

  • "... An important district also known as Kohistan lies to the north of Kabul in Afghanistan, extending to the Hindu Kush. The Kohistani Tajiks proved to be the most powerful and the best organized clans that opposed the British occupation of Kabul in 1879-80. ..."
http://encyclopedia.jrank.org/KHA_KRI/KOHISTAN.html

Miss Kohistani's mother-tongue is Persian:

"... The brunette, who speaks six languages including Russian and Persian, was selected from 40 contestants. ..."

New picture edit

I think this is a bad picture of her. We should get a better picture. I will try to change it. But I've never used Wikibefore, so my attempt my fail. If I can't change it, maybe you guys can help.

I think we should use this picture instead: http://www.missenglandwinner.co.uk/photos/Portfolio/hammasa_np5.jpg

Also, I think the 1st picture we have of her is not a good one. Infact, it is the worst picture of her that I have seen. I don't think she really is that ugly. That was just a bad picture.

I think we should remove the 1st picture and replace it with this one: http://www.missenglandwinner.co.uk/photos/Portfolio/hammasa_np6.jpg

The first picture, which I uploaded, shows her winning the Miss England crown which is relevant to the article. It is a cropped, fair use image used by many media sites, and it isn't relevant that you (personally) think she looked ugly on the day that she won Miss England. The site that you have taken your picture from clearly states that they are copyrighted and may not be used without permission, yet the image page states that it is a cropped version of a larger image? But I don't see why both images cannot be used. Thanks. — Lee J Haywood 21:23, 8 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I see your point. You think we need a picture of her winning the crown. I personally dont. I dont think we need to see her with a crown on. Its not that important.

But still, if you insist, instead of that picture we could use another one. That picture is just not believable. I dont even think thats her. Unless, she got plastic surgery.

If you really insist on a crown, then we could use this one: http://www.national-student.co.uk/National%20news/Miss%20England.jpg or http://images.scotsman.com/2005/09/05/0509missb.jpg

(its not copyrighted)

So if anyone could replace that pic with those ones ^, that would be much better.

no need to replace that pic ... everything's fine. It's a nice picture Tajik 13:59, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I strongly think that MOST people would side with me and disagree with you. Most people would agree with me that that is a bad picture. Therefore, I will take the initiative to adjust that picture myself.

If you guys insist of having a picture with a crown, you could add this one: http://www.persianmirror.com/images/edtorial/2006/hamasehkoohestani/hamasehkoohestani7.jpg
I don't think that is a bad picture at all. I actually think it looks good. Maybe you can add it back. Behnam 05:28, 7 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Why is the poll closed? And it is also possible, to add a kind of gallery with pictures at the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rob van Doorn (talkcontribs)

It was closed because I said I will close it on August 1, 2006, and it was opened June 20, 2006, which means it was open for more than a month. And looking at the votes, it was an overlwhelming majority (5/6) voting for that picture. If you feel that you have a picture that was not considered, please present it to us so we can consider it. Also, if you want a gallery, why not be bold and start it yourself? =) --ĶĩřβȳŤįɱéØ 06:32, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wait a Minute: How do we know she's Muslim? edit

Does she believe in Islam or are you ethnically labeling her as a Muslim? For instance under Heidi Klum page I doubt you'll find a statement by some nutjob muslim (ie nutjob chrsitian in the former case) describing her as the first Christian supermodel to cohost FIFA world cup.

Before asking questions like this, it's generally a good idea to READ THE DANG EXTERNAL LINKS. Chaotic nipple 19:31, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

If there is no solid proof to back up her ethnic backgound then it should not say she is Tajik.--119.30.66.245 (talk) 18:40, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hamassa Kohistani's ethnicity edit

Hamassa Kohistan in an interview with BBC PERSIAN(TAJIKISTAN) said she was a Tajik from Afghanistan. You can listen to the Radio interview in this link [8]

First, you (User:Anoshirawan) are the banned User:Tajik using a US proxy server and soon I will report you to admins. Someone in USA is allowing you to use their IP as a proxy. Second, Hammasa does not say she is ethnic Tajik in that interview on the radio. Stop your lies once and for all.--119.30.66.245 (talk) 20:47, 26 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Anyone who can speak Persian can listen for themselves and confirm that she said she is Tajik in her interview with BBC Persian. Even if you don't know Persian you can still listen and hear her say Tajik. Stop with your silly lies. Your just wasting everyone's time.

Shumah az Tajik haye Afghanistan hasten ya az Pashtun hayesh.... and She replied " Az Tajik hayesh". Now this obviously shows you are an ignorant person by fabricating hamassa kohistani's own words. Kohistan did not say " man az manteqeh Tajika astom" She said "Man az Tajikay Afghanistan astom".--Anoshirawan 00:39, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Hammasa Kohistani stated her Tajik ethnicty with BBC Persian edit

Here is an official link to her interview with BBC Persian where she clearly said that her ethnicity is Tajik.

That site is in Persian language and not in English. According this site, which is in English, she is ethnic Afghan (Pashtun).--119.30.79.164 (talk) 21:10, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Her saying that she is Tajik in an interview on BBC Persian is more reliable than comments on forums or amateurish sites like Afghanland.com. Also Afghanland does not mention her being Pashtun, they do not mean Pashtun by "ethnic Afghan". Even if they did that would contradict her own words.
Banned User:Beh-nam who is ashamed to sign his messages, the BBC Persian page cannot be understood by English-speaking editors here so it's useless because this is the English version Wikipedia. Plus, I already explained that she did not disclose her ethnic background in that BBC Persian interview. She only told that she or her family originates from northern Afghanistan. Afghanland.com is pretty reliable and the information displayed about her on that site is originally from The Guardian, see all the way down at the bottom left of the page where it says Source: the Guardian.--119.30.68.119 (talk) 14:38, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Either your Persian is very weak or you are just fooling around here. The interview went as follows (this is the exact translation) and someone from WikiProject Iran can come here and confirm it:

  • Interviewer: You are of the Tajiks of Afghanistan... or Pashtuns?
  • Hammasa: Of its Tajiks.
That's your opinion, but we have a different opinion. I'm no claiming her to be any ethnic but in order for you to make her Tajik you would need clear proof like how you have clear proof for Hamid Karzai and Zalmay Khalilzad as being ethnic Pashtuns. There needs to be at least one reliable sources that explains her ethnic background in english text. Now there is nothing wrong with this you low life.

Here is an official link to her interview with BBC Persian where she clearly said that her ethnicity is Tajik.

In other sources the term Afghan (Something of, from, with familial roots in, or pertaining to Afghanistan, a country in Central/South Asia click here) is used in the sense of beeing from Afghanistan (her family were citizen of Afghanistan, therefore the word Afghan), not of beeing Pashtun. It would be better to use the word Afghanistani as the American government use it. According to the british law, she is of british citizen--Šāhzādé (talk) 15:12, 30 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

She is Pashai edit

No where does she call her self a "Tajik". She is more likely a Pashai due to her last name. "Pashai: There are some Pashai in the south-east portion of Hisa-I-Duwumi Panjshir district. There is very little useful data on the Pashai, outside of some intense research on their language. They inhabit Nuristan, parts of Laghman, and northern Nangarhar, seemingly between the Pashtun and Nuristanis. Many consider themselves Pashtun. They speak a Dardic language referred to as Pashai. Often they are associated with or referred to as Kohistani. The majority of Pashai in Laghman rely on the livestock and timber business." [9], [10] Her father's name is Khushal and that's a very obvious Pashtun name. She speaks six languages, not only English, Russian and Persian but 3 others. Wonder what those other 3 languages are?--119.73.4.117 (talk) 09:27, 26 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, she is Pashai, originally from the Panjshir Province (historically known as Kohistan), where they are 5% of the population. Pashais are closer to the Pashtun people. I don't know why she is labeled Tajik in her article in Wikipedia, that's stupid. —Preceding unsigned comment added by PanjshirPashtun (talkcontribs) 13:14, 27 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
