About the notable people section edit

Hello!

Arjayay This page is about a city named Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh state so giving links to the notable people from entire Hamirpur Parliamentary constituency/Hamirpur Assembly constituency and entire Hamirpur district is not relevant to this page. Those people can have and they have their wikipedia page but shouldn't be mentioned as notable people of that city (Since their work/representation is related with Hamirpur UP district so they may be included in district article). With this analogy Prime Minister of India will feature in notable people's list of each and every city/village/state article of India.

Following are the reasons why the below mentioned people shouldn't be included in the notable people's list of Hamirpur city

1. Rajnarayan Budholia - If you refer to the official bio page from his wikipedia page you can find his birth place on record as Rath city in Hamirpur district and not Hamirpur city.

2. Ashok Kumar Singh Chandel - from official bio link from his wikipedia page it is clear that he was born in a village called Tikrauli in Hamirpur District not Hamirpur city

3. Vishambhar Prasad Nishad - His wikipedia page mentions his birth place a village Bada Kachhar in Hamirpur district not Hamirpur city

4. Pushpendra Singh Chandel - As per his wikipedia page he was born in Mahoba, which is not even part of Hamirpur district.

5. Niranjan Jyoti - As per her wikipedia page she was born in village Patewra in Hamirpur district, not Hamirpur city.

6. Virendra Sharma - He is from a different Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh and unrelated to any Hamirpur (UP) jurisdiction.

7. Kailash Vajpeyi - except the wiki page I don't find any other reliable link to establish his birth place. I hope he was born in Hamirpur city of Uttar Pradesh and is good to keep his name in the notable people's list for Hamirpur city of Uttar Pradesh. Rohit klar (talk)

Hi Rohit klar - although I understand that many people confuse cities with districts, and have spent a lot of time trying to explain this to some editors, being born in a place is not the only criterion.
If someone has lived in, or represented a place, as in being an MP or other official representing that place, that qualifies them as a "notable person" with respect to that place.
Please compare Category:People from Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh with Category:People from Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh - although I didn't add any entry to either list.
I have no idea why you are talking about Virendra Sharma as the article lists Virender Sharma - Arjayay (talk) 21:39, 14 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Arjayay Yes being born in a place is not the only criterion and a member of parliament or assembly doesn't merely represent one city/village but represent a considerably large area and that was the reason I mentioned the analogy to Prime Minister as he would become a notable person for each and every city/village of a country because he represents it. I do understand that if that person has some other association with the area like stayed in that area even for sometime for studies or work then he could be mentioned as a notable person from that place. I don't know who created that category for Hamirpur city which has wrong links. I have already cited initially to check the details of their wikipedia pages and the external official links provided in that and nothing suggest any direct link to Hamirpur city in Uttar Pradesh. As far as mention of Virendra Sharma in my initial comment is concerned was a typo but I didn't provide the wiki hyperlink and I asked you to refer to the link you added in the article. Please check Virender Sharma is a person from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh not Hamirpur, UP. Not everything mentioned on wikipedia is 100% reliable so blindly copying something mentioned in a category is I would recommend not to follow. You check yourself and tell me in which link/reference these people are mentioned related to Hamirpur city in UP barring to the fact that they are representatives of an area which encompasses this city which is not a criterion enough to include them as a notable person for this city (please remember Prime Minister analogy). Please don't just look in the info box of these people's wiki page but see the details of their lives section. Rohit klar (talk) 22:13, 14 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi Rohit klar - I have been looking to see if there is any guidance on inclusion/exclusion criteria for such lists, but all I could find was Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/Settlements: Article structure#Notable people which just states:-
Notable people
Names of notable people born or residing in the locality (not ancestry). Include only people with a Wikipedia article, see also WP:NLIST.
That isn't very helpful - especially "residing in the locality" - how "local" is "the locality"? is it to avoid saying city/town/village? or is it meant to include people living near, but outside, the city/town/village? If so, how near?
Personally, I think that your example of a Prime Minister is stretching your argument far too far, local MPs are local MPs. However, if you think Local MPs should be excluded, unless they were actually born in, or lived in, the city, then I am not going to make a big deal about it.
Clearly people from Harimpur, Himachal Pradesh should not be included - that was my mistake - so I have removed that name and corrected the category on their page. - Best wishes - Arjayay (talk) 09:41, 15 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Arjayay The PM analogy may appear too far fetched but we don't have a logical counter to this argument as well since definition of locality doesn't clearly define limitation (personally to me a locality should be a very small area at max stretching to city limit but not beyond that). I would keep only Kailash Vajpeyi's name in the list. Rest of the names doesn't make much sense to be in Hamirpur city article. Those names anyway can be kept in Hamirpur constituency and Hamirpur district's page. Rohit klar (talk) 16:49, 23 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough Rohit klar - I see you have already deleted all but one - as I said "I am not going to make a big deal about it." - Arjayay (talk) 17:12, 23 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
