Carl Rosa

Clarke was certainly appointed conductor of the Carl Rosa company. The Manchester Guardian, 24 June 1893, p.3 says that he was expected to conduct, inter alia Le Cid, I Pagliacci, Rienzi and The Flying Dutchman. But nowhere subsequently in The Times, Guardian or Observer is there any reference to Clarke's conducting the company in anything, though there are dozens of references in those papers to the company in the relevant period. Apologies - I wasn't making myself clear: what I was trying to say, above, is that though I can find unequivocal evidence that Clarke was appointed to the Carl Rosa conductorship I cannot find any evidence that he took up the appointment or indeed ever actually conducted a single performance for the company. Pinafore arrangement for Covent Garden

Gervase Hughes: "...Hamilton Clarke, who also arranged a brilliant orchestral 'selection' which Sullivan later included in a concert programme..." Not sure if this should be included: the Clarke selection hasn't survived, has it? And if not, how did Hughes know it was "brilliant". Tim riley (talk)

Cradled among the Reeds

It is correct to say that HC was recruited by Thomas German Reed? Am I misreading the WP article on Reed when I think Reed had retired before HC was hired? Was it Reed Jr who hired him? Tim riley (talk) 18:47, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
