English titles

I'm uncomfortable with the use of English titles for members of the Yogyakarta dynasty, e.g., His Majesty, His Royal Highness, Lord and Lady.

• Majesty, as far as I am aware of, is only used in reference to monarchs reigning over independent sovereign nations. Even in Malaysia, the monarchs of the Malaysian states are only referred to as "Their Royal Highnesses". Indonesia is a unitary republic, so the Sultans of Yogyakarta only reign over not even a state, but a mere province, albeit with special autonomy. Maybe, it would be best to do away with all of these English and European titles and only use Javanese titles.
• The use of "Lord" and "Lady" is even more ridiculous in a Javanese context. Neither of these titles captures the subtlety and varying levels of Javanese titles. Exact Dates?

I've left two date confusions here due to lack of facts:

When he ascended the throne (1988 vs 1989) -- father died in 1988 but previous info lists ascension in 1989 in the box at the bottom (maybe issue of a period before coronation?)

When he became governor -- box at bottom states 1999, intro paragraph states oct 3, 1998 -- I'm guessing oct 3 1998 was election and began term in 1999??

I live in Yogyakarta also. It's true that Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X doesn't have any son. But AFAIK it's not a problem. When a Sultan of Yogyakarta doesn't have any son, usually he will be succeeded by his younger brother. This scenario happened in the Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono V's era, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VI was the younger brother of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono V (so both Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono V and Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VI were the sons of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IV). In the Mataram tradition, there's a codec called Pranata, and a traditional law, an internal mechanism in the Kraton, called Paugeran to choose the right heir of the throne. Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X said that there's a probability the new Sultan would be female, but I think he's not serious since based on the Paugeran, usually a Sultan is male not female, so I think the next Sultan will be his younger brother based on Paugeran.

Too bad, Pranata and Paugeran are internal mechanisms in the Kraton and only few people know. We can find only few articles about Pranata and Paugeran using Google.

Formal Name

Can we change his name into Hamengkubuwono X instead of Hamengkubuwana X? Can somebody change his name into Hamengkubuwono X? AFAIK his formal name written in Latin alphabet is H-a-m-e-n-g-k-u-b-u-w-O-n-O X. In Indonesia especially in Special Region of Yogyakarta, his formal name is usually written as Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X (not Hamengkubuwana).

I was bold and changed the name of this article from Hamengkubuwana X to Hamengkubuwono X in line with WP:TITLE based on the following considerations

1. It's how the Yogyakarta special region official website spells it (http://www.pemda-diy.go.id/)
2. It's how both of Indonesia's major English language newspapers, the Jakarta Globe and the Jakarta Post spell it, see [here] and [here]
3. Kahin in Nationalism and Revolution in Indonesia, Feith in The Decline of Constitutional Democracy in Indonesia and Jones in Indonesia: the Possible Dream all spell it like that (although honesty compels me to admit that Ricklefs uses the spelling I'm arguing against in A History of Modern Indonesia)
4. Hamengkubuwono has 657,000 hits on Google, while Hamengkubuwana has 89,900

This article does not come from a neutral point of view. There is very subjective language that reads like propaganda. I don't know enough about the Sultan to fix this into something better though, so someone please do so if you're knowledgeable. — Fuebar ^{[talk | cont]} 21:30, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
