Terms

I removed the redirect because hamada is a valid (if esoteric) topographical term for this desert feature, and some people (for instance, me) are not looking Hamada, Shimane when they type this in. Perhaps a disambiguation page would be more appropriate (in which case this should be sent to Hamada (topography) or Hamada (desert feature) or something similar). If someone out there feels that the vast majority of people who type in "Hamada" really are looking specifically for "Hamada, Shimane", then feel free to return the original redirect, but please preserve the information on the desert feature somewhere.

It would also be greatly appreciated if someone more knowledgeable than I am would flesh out this article, since I do realize it's currently sadly emaciated. Thanks all! Mineralogy 07:59, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

حمادة

The Arabic name is حمادة or حماد NOT همادة,also I think the explaination for the roots of the Arabic name is not correct.--Aziz1005 16:48, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

I had also asked User:Menasim to comment on this (since he's got the same Arabic language userbox on his page that you do), hopefully having two contributors attesting to the accuracy of the spelling will prevent anon users from changing it. I Would like to clarify that Hamada is orginated from Arabic and it does not refer to Desert landscape or topographical identity. I changed the wikipedia spelling of the Arabic to حمادة, in contrast to حماده (which is a uneducated way of writing the word, where the person lazily uses the ه letter rather than the ة letter) as well as الحماد (which unnecessarily includes the definite article, unneeded for referencing the Arabic word...plus more importantly, it lacks the ة that was included in the (correct) romantized transcription already given). That all being said, I have not seen this حمادة term in the dictionary (nor any term under the ح-م-د root matching this description). The ه-م-د root though does semantically look like it matches better (the dictionaries even has a word under this root that means a place with no herbage, a dry, desolate place, infertile land...although that word in Arabic was written as هامدة hāmida, so I'm not 100% sure if that specific word was the source of this English word due to the "i" in the middle...but it does seem like the closest thing). I think it should be reexamined if حمادة (or any word using ح rather than ه) is really the sourse word, in contrast to some word of the ه-م-د root such as هامدة or something. 2601:19B:801:AA2:E583:97C7:4601:BA0A (talk) 01:48, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
