Was Kawakami Hajime expelled or resigned from Kyoto University? edit

Hi everyone,

I was reading the "Soliloquy in My prison Cell, 1933" from Kawakami which appeared in "Japan: A documentary History" Volume 2 by David J. Lu, Chapter XIII (Taisho Democracy). 1997.

In his prison letter, Kawakami wrote that "Political activities have never been congenial to me. In spite of this, I became more and more involved in them after 1928 when I resigned as a professor at Kyoto University."

The exact date when he resigned is not clear, except that it could be in 1928 or after. This could be verified by getting another source, but what I am wondering about is, if he resigned or was expelled?

I find it logical for him to be expelled because of being subversive, but here it is written (from his own prison letter) that he resigned from Kyoto University.

I'd like to have some opinions and feedback before I make any changes to the page! Oh yeah, If someone can get me the exact year (maybe month too), it would be appreciated.

Many thanks
