District or Island edit

Haikou article says: "Part of Haikou city, the district of Haidian Island, is separated from the main part of Haikou by the Nandu River." True? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:50, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think that the district in this context is a general term like area, not the capitalized District as an official administrative division in China. Haikou has only four Districts: Xiuying, Longhua, Qiongshan, and Meilan, see administrative divisions of Haikou at Haikou government's official website.--Pengyanan (talk) 13:16, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
That makes sense. Many thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 14:12, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Lighthouse and park name edit

They differ. Is one incorrect? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:09, 10 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I believe that the word Baishaman in "Baishaman Park" is a typo. It should be Baishamen. The editor who added this information used Baishamen in his/her edit summary. I have corrected it. Baisha Men and Baishamen are same in Chinese characters. And I think that there should be no space inside the pinyin of this place name. --Pengyanan (talk) 13:11, 10 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well done. Thank you. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 17:39, 10 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Pengyanan, it was a typo. You are right, Baishamen is one word when written using pinyin. Philg88 (talk) 20:52, 10 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Reclaimed land edit

Wasn't the whole island under water or actually created? And what about all that new land being created off the eastern shore? I can't find info/refs for that. Anyone? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:09, 10 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

The history of Haidian Island goes back to the Han Dynasty when there were fisherman living on the various sandy islands dotted around the area. There was a ferry there (to cross the Nandu River) which lasted until the Song when the area was left to turn back into wilderness. Silt from the Nandu speeded up the land formation process but it wasn't until the 1980's that the hand of man made an appearance and filled/drained the whole lot. This info comes largely from oral sources on Haidian Island - you will find it difficult if not impossible to track down any references (except in one particular book that you are aware of :) ) and they will probably be in Chinese. Juicy. I'd say add it to the article with no ref. Is the information a rock? On a scale of 1-10. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:37, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Also, a bit about the flatness, elevation, and flooding problems. And again, what of the new land being made on the west side? There must be news on that. I just can't find it. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:42, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
On a scale of 1-10 I'd give the information a 9 - it's pretty well known amongst the older local Chinese. Not sure why there's no info on the western expansion - maybe not considered important/newsworthy. Philg88 (talk) 22:40, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
