Georgetown

According to the article, "Surveys were carried out centred on the waters around the British Virgin Islands and visits were made to Georgetown, Barbados and Roadtown, Tortola." Which Georgetown? There are several in the Caribbean. --Russ Blau (talk) 16:48, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Well, judging from the maps, it'll be Georgetown, Grenada or Georgetown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Guyana, Cayman and Bahamas are all relatively far away from Barbados and the Virgin Islands. --Dangherous 10:59, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

That's St. George's, Grenada. And my guess -- but just a guess -- is that the reference should be to George Town, Cayman Islands. It's not really that far away from the Virgins; about a day's cruise for a modern naval vessel, even if they do have to stay out of Cuban waters. Bloated with non-notable detail

HMS Hydra - the writer would be grateful for advice from Graeme Leggett

Dear Graeme, I have no idea if this is the right place to ask you as I am no expert on Wikipedia. But, having spents many days and nights researching the information about HMS Hydra, in response to feedback I had had from those both serving in the Navy and those who knew nothing about the Navy, I'd much value your advice. Where, for instance, has all my work gone, once you have cut it? I never anticipated it would be removed so arbitrarily.

You say that there is too much detail of the ship's programme, yet nowhere in the public domain is such information available and it is likely to be of interest to a fair number of people. The breakdown of a ship's company, at any one time, is also not available publicly and this will be of interest to those who wonder what, or who, the 120 men in a ship's complement are.

I had in mind to cut some of the text when I had time. You can see from the history, the hours of the day and night when I was doing all this. I just ran out of time for now, to be honest.

The battle honours and predecssors - a huge amount of research went into that and now it's gone. Please help me, at least, retrieve this. But, the battle honours are absolutely relevant to HMS Hydra - they sit nowhere else, and, of course, they relate to the former ships, as does the list of former Captains (again, lots of time and research even to get this far).

I've already had a phone call from someone asking me what happened to the list! I would really be grateful if we could discuss this. I need to understand more about what I have done wrong as my time surely cannot be wasted like this again. For a start your work remains in the earlier version history. The bits on earlier Hydras including battle honours has gone to HMS Hydra. I think you should read though the various bits on wikipedia so that you can see how it works and how it should be edited. I suggest you also go read through these two: Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not Wikipedia:No original research. Also have a look at some other ship articles eg HMS Hood (51) as an example of an informative article and HMS Hood to see how a ship "index page" works. For Graeme Leggett - I am new to wikipedia and initially thought it was an excelent source of information. I appreciated the information on the Ships Company that Lester May placed on the Hydra (A144) page and thought it was invaluable. It is something that I as the Founder of the Survey Ships Association have been looking for to get lists of our Ships' Companies that can be added to and amended by anyone that browses Wilkipedia. I have sent the URL to many colleagues and placed it on our website ( since removed again!!) aksing them to update and correct it. I will now look pretty stupid. You as a person that has no interest in the ship or its role in the Falklands War may look on this information as unecessary, but we certainly do not. So who is to say what is and is not needed or necessary? I thought that Wilkipedia was for the placement of legitimate information and as long as that was the case it was acceptable. Why should I or Lester (or anyone else for that matter) spend hours researching and typing information in to a page just to have it arbitarily deleted on someones whim. That in itself is not good etiquete and downright bad manners. You could at least have had thge courtesy to contact Lester first. Like Lester I would like to know how to retrieve this valuable information? Having warmed to wilikpedia at first, I am now disinclined to use it, or indeed to recommend it to anyone as it seems to be far too dictatorial to me. I accept that the Hydra is notable, mainly through its Falklands service but the article needs to be kept to the point. As to notability, that is defined by wikipedia, see Wikipedia:Notability and Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not which give some idea of what should be included. I feel that while information on the various activities of Hydra is relevant - descriptions of non-notable surveys and long lists of ships personnel are not pertinent to this article. Previous versions of the article are under the history tab (between "edit this page" and "move"). What could be done is to recreate the ships company lists as a new article - that will not (to my mind) clutter up the ship article and should other editors feel that the company list isd non-notable then its inclusion can be discussed as a separate item.GraemeLeggett 12:37, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Fake references

There appears to be a lot of so called references which do not support the text which they are attached to just pictures or charts of places where Hydra is said to have gone. This effectively means that very large parts of the article are completely unreferenced.Nigel Ish (talk) 21:19, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
