Other Calypsos
editThere is an HMS Calypso that touched at Pitcairn Island on March 9, 1848, Captain Henry J. Worth. It is mentioned in the Pitcairn Island Register on that date and in a [Royal Commission Report] in 1975. James Galloway (talk) 16:06, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Too many Cherokee Brigs
editWe currently have 3 Calypsos of the Cherokee class, with 3 different measurements, one launched as Hyena, renamed Calypso, two named Calypso, renamed Hyena (both canceled in 1831, but from different dockyards):
- HMS Calypso, a 10-gun brig-sloop of the Cherokee class. To measure 239 tons burthen. Deptford Dockyard. Ordered 1824 for construction at Deptford Dockyard; renamed Hyaena in 1826; and cancelled 21 February 1831.
- HMS Calypso, to be a 10-gun brig-sloop of the Cherokee class of 233 tons burthen. Laid down March 1825 at Chatham Dockyard as HMS Hyaena; launched 19 August 1826 and renamed Calypso that same year; completed as a yacht for the governor of Malta. Later a packet brig for Royal Navy. Lost 1 February 1833.
- HMS Calypso, to be a 10-gun brig-sloop of the Cherokee class, measuring 235 tons burthen. Laid down 1829 at Woolwich dockyard; renamed Hyaena in 1830; cancelled 1831.
