Which Herod?

edit

Can someone insert text explaining the characters of this play as regards to the actual historical persons? Even merely providing the proper links, if possible, for Herod and Salome would be helpful. There's Herod the Great (a.k.a. Herod II), Herod III (a.k.a. Herod Philip I), etc. It appears there is more than one Mariamne as well.

I added links and a brief description of the plot. The historical characters are Herod the Great, his sister Salome I and his wife Mariamne I. Another editor had linked the character of "Varus" to Publius Quinctilius Varus but it's clear that this is not right because the dates don't match: Mariamne was executed in 29 BCE but the historical Varus was governor of Syria from 8 to 4 BCE. Voltaire's Varus is an invented, non-historical character, though no doubt the name was suggested by the historical Varus. Gdr 12:23, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
