Umlauts

Should there be umlauts on both the "u" and "o" of "Gyuto"? Badagnani (talk) 07:36, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Only a matter of trying to represent the pronunciation. There is no 'goog' or 'bad' in this.rudy (talk) 10:17, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

The term 'Order' of the title seems inappropriate

In Buddhism, I think it is not tradition to speak of a monastic 'order' if you talk about a monastery. It's 'just' a monastery, or in this case also a tantric college. If you can speak of an equivalent to the western/Christian monastic tradition, the 'Order' would be the gelugpa. So, rather then redirecting the Gyuto page to this one, I think this should really be deleted? I cannot imagine anyone ever looking for the Gyuto order, just as little as people will look for the 'Sera order' or 'Drepung order'...rudy (talk) 10:17, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

I agree. When I first visited Gyuto in Dalhousie in 1972 it was called a Tantric College. More recently, it has been referred to as a Tantric University. How about: Gyuto Tantric University is one of the great colleges of the Gelug Order, the Reformed Church of Tibetan Buddhism. About the umlauts: When I discussed this with my good friend Glenn Mullin, an excellent Tibetan scholar, he opined that its really optional. Dating of the Nonesuch Explorer "Mahakala" album: The Mahakala and Sangwa Dupa recordings were made during monsoon 1972. I returned to New York in early '73, and Nonesuch in the person of Tracey Sterne accepted both programmes at that time. So I think the Mahakala LP would have been released either in '73 or no later than '74.
