Importance edit

Article importance promoted to high as he had a large impact on the development of the life support and flight rescue systems across the XX century. --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 18:09, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

First name edit

should be Gay under WP:RUS. Thoughts on what we should do? -- Y not be working? 22:01, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Em, he was not gay (Гей), but Guy (Гай). We may write it Gaii or like in Latin - Gaius, if ya' wish. Or, at least, Gai. I thought about that when I created this article and I insist on "Guy", because it's the closest spelling to Russian "Гай". --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 22:27, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
No! Gai is a road policy in Russia:) --Paukrus (talk) 08:24, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Then Gaii, it's not a road police. --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 08:31, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
No! Gaii is Гаии. It's only coincidence. No any assotiation for "гей".--Paukrus (talk) 09:18, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Gaii or Gaius is Latin, learn Latin. Gay is Гей. Dot. --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 10:26, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Гай=Gay. Г=G, А=A, Й=Y. Learn Russian Language. Sorry for assotiations with homosexualism. --Paukrus (talk) 05:07, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Convention matters. Not insulting our subject matters as well. Can anyone show how Severin spelled his name in English while he was living? -- Y not be working? 05:49, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
See on the NPP Zvezda official site. If this is still not enough, you can try to search his name in the records of IAA. Also, see here. --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 06:03, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
With some time lag, his obituary will surely be on the IAA web site. --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 06:06, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Why Leonid Gaidai (Гайдай)? It should be "Gay Day" then... I repeatedly insist, that his name should spell in English as Guy or at least Gai. Like Guy Hamilton. --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 08:29, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Sorry! There is a town Gay in Orenburg Oblast! Pronunciation of this town is the same as name of Severin (Russian: Гай). --Paukrus (talk) 08:31, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
    IPA: [ɡaɪ] --Paukrus (talk) 08:33, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
"Gay Town"? Hmm, nice... I've no more but one comment - the lead sentence gives the second transliteration "Gay or Gai". The name spelling may vary... --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 10:05, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Why Guy Ritchie is translated as Гай Ритчи and not Гуй Ритчи? Gay-Lussac's law is Гей-Люссак, not Гай-Люссака. Enough? --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 10:19, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Gay (Гай) means "birch grove, birchwood" in Russian Language. No any homosexual. --Paukrus (talk) 23:32, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
But it means homosexual in English (See Talk:Gay, Russia analysis). And, please, respect his own translation of his name (re-read this talk page above). He did not like the translation "Gay" and he knew English well. --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 08:06, 9 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Read WP:RUS once more. It's clearly stated that "the disambiguation page listing all the meanings of "Байкал" is to be located at Baykal (disambiguation), despite the fact that the most common English spelling of the primary meaning of the word (a lake in Russia) is "Baikal". Baikal, pronounced [bʌjˈkɑl]!! The primary meaning of the name is Gai Severin (or Gaii Severin, Gaius Severin, Guy Severin). The pronunciation matters. --Yuriy Lapitskiy ~ 10:42, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am now convinced that notwithstanding WP:RUS, we should have him under Guy because that is how he spelled his own name in English. -- Y not be working? 15:42, 8 February 2008 (UTC) - Moved. -- Y not be working? 16:46, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

As per WP:RUS#People, romanizations not compliant with the main WP:RUS table are permitted when documented. Please leave the article at the standard location for now but do submit a move request and provide the substantiation for the alternative spelling of the name (the links provided above are a very good start), citing the applicable WP:RUS exception clause. In other words, stop bickering and adhere to the process. This is exactly why we have the guidelines—so people would not have to act on emotions and subjective perceptions alone. • Support. #2 alone seems sufficient to justify the move; per WP:RUS#People #1.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:12, 29 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Support, I agree, it's definitely "Guy" per WP:RUS: "published in English" and "person's preference". —AlexSm 02:23, 1 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. WP:RUS is irrelevant. There is no "Romanizing" for Wikipedians to be doing, when it has already been done. End of story. Gene Nygaard (talk) 20:08, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Comment. A guideline approved by the community for the community's use can hardly be "irrelevant" to the said community. I wonder how you would handle the cases when a name has "already been" romanized in twenty different ways, which, unfortunately, is a quite common situation. —Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 21:54, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
