NB I have edited the Pinyin pronunciation of this name, in which the last character is "tāo" (not táo) -- any doubter can confirm this, as I did, with reference to an authoritative dictionary such as Hanyu dacidian.

Alternative spellings of his name edit

These need to be added. For example, Illustrated London News, October 13 1877, page 362: "Kuo-Ta-Jin, the Ambassador Extraordinary from the Emperor of China, has replied to an address sent to him from a meeting representing the Society of Friends held in London a month ago".
