Population edit

I am unable to find a reliable source for the regions population figure. Would it be acceptable to add up the populations of the 7 shires from census data and use that amount? If so the shire articles still have 2001 census data, whereas the ABS website would have the latest 2006 data. The ABS also notes that the Gulf Country and Far North Region of Queensland is one of two clusters in Australia where census data is not that reliable because many Aboriginals do not complete the survey.
