- All peppers and any plant that produces an exposed (above ground) edible capsule containing its seed(s) for propagation (apple, strawberry, avocado, cucumber) is a fruit. Among many botanical sources, there is this one by Merriam Webster Dictionary: "Any thing that grows on a plant and is the means by which that plant gets its seeds out into the world is a fruit.
