Talk:Greater spotted eagle

Taxonomy edit

This species and its relatives, the Lesser and Indian Spotted Eagles, stand apart from all other true eagles. They should probably better be removed from the genus Aquila and united with the Long-crested Eagle in Lophaetus, or all four should be moved to Ictinaetus[citation needed].

I don't think this kind of taxonomic speculation has its place in a encyclopeadia. Taxonomic classification may be imperfect but wikipedia is not the place to criticise it. "should be": is that a personal wish of the author?(See WP:AWT) If recent research has shown that these species are genetically similar, then this could be mentioned in this article but only if it is backed with reliable sources. Unless the author cares to justify his statement i'll be removing it. Raoulduke47 17:58, 9 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Description edit

This section feels overly long and dense. Should this be simplified? Similar pages and descriptions of birds tend to be much more approachable. grungaloo (talk) 22:35, 17 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

I agree - extremely detailed language is used throughout the article, not just in Description, and a lot of the length comes from repetition of specifics regarding the different characteristics of the eagle and related species. Much of this information does not look to be of use to anyone but the most well informed birders, as I have some experience with ornithology but can't picture what this bird looks like from the description alone due to all the minutiae. I did a run through of the grammar to the end of Distribution and habitat but there's enough information here to split off into a separate article, perhaps titled Differences between eagles of genus Clanga.
