Are they native to Montenegro and Macedonia? ?
This question is especially for the ones that live in Montenegro. As far as I know, prior to the construction of the salt pans in Ulcinj in 1934, there were no flamingos in Montenegro at all. Why isn't it at least mentioned? Their range is mentioned alongside other lands where they are infact native, so what gives? Does anyone even know how they were brought to Montenegro? I don't think this is a Greater, too pink, and there seems to be too large an area of black on the bill. May be Chilean Flamingo, but can't see the legs. I'll dump it here for now until I can check, jimfbleak 05:57, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Hi from Adrian, here's a pic I took of the one I'm sure it is - the Caribbean (just compare the beaks). Happily all six sorts of flamingo are a 40 minute drive from here (Slimbridge Wildfowl Reserve) so I've got pics of them all. I'll illustrate the James article soon.
- Greaters are very much paler in the body and don't have the red patch on the beak (the Greater's beak is black at the tip and entirely pink behind)
- Lesser beak, going tip to rear, is black-red-black
- James have a spot of yellow on the beak
- Chilean doesn't have any red on the beak
- neither does Andean
- and so we're left with Caribbean.
