So fresh, so clean edit

Heyo. Cleaned up the article to a significant degree. See my edit summary for more detail. Hope that helps you. -- HomfrogTalk 19:38, 23 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Secondary/Recurring Characters edit

There seems to be some disagreement as to how to classify the characters. The editors 68.228.153.247 and 98.163.121.68 appear to disagree on this issue. To the best of my knowledge, Wikipedia does not have a set standard for character classification. Personally, I do not see the difference between "recurring" and "secondary" characters. Given the unclear criteria for a "secondary" character, I propose we only use "main", "minor", "recurring", and "antagonists". EvergreenFir (talk) 21:46, 26 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

For note, Waddles is not a main character. He does not appear in every episode, and when he does it's usually a cameo. EvergreenFir (talk) 04:16, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but neither does Wendy and she is considered a main character. In fact, Waddles has appeared in one more episode than Wendy, and that's not even counting episodes where neither of them have lines. I couldn't care less whether Waddles was considered a main character or not, I'm just pointing it out. Although I do realize that Wendy definitely has more lines in her episodes than Waddles typically does. Gagaluv1 (talk) 20:02, 22 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Which prod. codes edit

Well, even though official character scripts and scenes show different production codes. We should list the prod. codes from outr most reliable source cocatalog.loc.gov CHall2002 (talk) 01:46, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Infobox info - network edit

According to Template:Infobox television, the network field is for the original channel(s) or network(s) on which the show has appeared. Do not add foreign broadcasters here. Use links if articles are available. To me, that means that whatever network airs premieres is what should be listed. In that case, Disney stopped airing them in 2014. We can get WP:TV to weigh in on this if needed. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 20:20, 22 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Fair point, however, I personally have never seen another article that does this. Disney Channel still airs the show, they just air it a week or two after Disney XD. What about Wander Over Yonder? They are in the same situation as gravity falls, yet Disney Channel is still listed as one of their channels. I think we should get more people to weigh in on this so that we can reach a consensus.Gagaluv1 (talk) 20:32, 22 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
It could be both, since both shows have had eps on Disney Channel first before Disney XD. 75.111.52.129 (talk) 23:37, 24 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
I would vote that both should be included. Disney and Disney XD are two separate channels. The show used to premiere on the latter, and now it (mostly) premieres on the former. There are several shows out there (Scrubs, Smallville, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doug, et cetera) that, because they changed channels, list both, with the years in parentheses.--Gen. Dipper's Name edit

I'm pretty sure "Dipper" actually is his name. It's a stupid name, but I thought it was clarified that he's saddled with it anyway. Someone should check this and edit his character description if so. It currently assumes it is a nickname. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1009:b04b:9838:a5b2:30e9:8d10:b4fc (talkcontribs) 21:10, November 23, 2014‎ (UTC)

Actually, Dipper is his nickname. It was revealed in Journal 3 that Dipper's real name is Mason. ImFreakshow (talk) 09:58, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

ImFreakshow is correct. I personally own a journal. BBStoneHobbyArt (talk) 00:14, 17 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Character descriptions too long edit

Since the article List of Gravity Falls characters has been created with a copy of content from this article it is no longer necessary to give more than a bare description of the characters in this article. After a split it is expected that only a summary will remain behind and the current level of description is excessive as a summary. Geraldo Perez (talk) 16:35, 14 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Even more so given that Dipper Pines, Mabel Pines, and Grunkle Stan exist. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 17:51, 14 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, they do exist. Noble Stanley "Stan" Pines and I are Nobles of the same Shrine. Robur et Furor Tjlynnjr (talk) 18:55, 7 October 2015 (UTC) .Reply

Jesus Alzamirano edit

@ChamithN: this is actually the name on the driver license of Soos. He is called Soos Ramirez on his Laser Tag license, but a driver license is a more legal document. Although his signature itself on the driver license is SOOS, the actual legal forenames is printed on it. In Special:Diff/696745908 you reverted my addition of this information and then gave me a warning for making unconstructive edits.

I think you ought to do more research before assuming bad faith as you did. I take it you did not actually watch (or at least remember) the episode in question, or you would know it was factual. I was correct to cite the episode as evidence of this information. Perhaps you should watch when Mabel and Dipper look through his wallet before surprising him for his birthday. --174.92.135.167 (talk) 18:28, 25 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

It's trivial info, particularly for the main article. What should go here is the credited character names - generally that is also what is most commonly used, not info revealed in passing. Adding that info to the character article as added info there is more appropriate. This article should focus on an out-of-universe perspective and official credits are a part of that. Geraldo Perez (talk) 18:42, 25 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
In that case it is questionable as to whether or not we should include surnames at all since in the show characters are most commonly just called by their first names. Even the surname Pines which we hear way more often in the show dialogue does not appear in the opening or end credits. The opening theme simply says Dipper - Mabel - Stan and the end credits say -as Dipper- and -as Mabel- and -as Gruncle Stan and Soos- and -as Wendy- when assigning the voice talents.
The surnames are not credited but we include them because the real names of characters is not trivial at all. Not all valuable info about characters is present in their credits, which often gives as little as a first or even nick name along with their voice acting.
To simply call him Soos in the same way we say Mabel gives the false impression that Soos is his actual name. We should indicate it as a nickname if that is what we learn it to be.
A more interesting thing would be the full name of Gruncle Stan. The deed for the mystery shack (and what Gideon calls him) is Stanford Pines. However his vanity license plate appears to indicate it as being Stanley. That guy has a lot of secrets though so misleading people about his name would not be unusual. I would say his house deed trumps his license as authority here. In the same way that driver license trumps laser tag membership.
EDIT: oh wait, reading the Gruncle Stan article cleared this up for me but I wonder if we really ought to have that info on an article (if he should have a page at all) as explaining the Stanley-Stanford discrepancy is kind of a HUGE spoiler for the series. I had not yet seen the episodes that revealed this and felt kinda let down. Perhaps we should say that Gruncle Stan is Stan Pines and that he has a deed saying Stanford (and that Gideon calls him this) and a license plate saying Stanley but not explain why this is and let people watch the show to find out... I dunno. Reveals like this seem more appropriate for episode summaries so people can more easily about reading spoilers from later seasons than to be left in the character summary. Knowing Soos is short for Jesus does not spoil anything but this Stan issue is a BIG spoil.
They do not merely show his name BTW since Dipper reads out the guard pronouncing Jesus as Hey Zeus in the mexican sort of way. --174.92.135.167 (talk) 02:11, 26 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I have to admit that I issued the warning in error. I had no idea that "Jesus Alzamirano Ramirez" was Soos's full name until the IP provided me this. When I saw "Jesus" in his edit I thought this guy is back at it again. -- Chamith (talk) 04:08, 26 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
At this level of article we don't want more that what the credits say. See http://www.webcitation.org/67x2ZM7yi for names as used in the article as that is where they came from originally. If the in-episode credits don't give last names then they could be removed from this article. We have a character article which is where all explanations and expansions correctly belongs. This article just needs the basics with no expansion. Geraldo Perez (talk) 06:07, 26 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Category on BLP articles edit

I had to remove Category:Gravity Falls from a few BLP articles such as Alex Hirsch as it caused them to be categorized as Disney shows. I'm not sure what's the best category structure to avoid this, if such categories are appropriate for BLPs at all. nyuszika7h (talk) 18:48, 20 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Horror genre? edit

Why isn't this show considered a horror? It's really dark, scary, violent, bloody, disturbing and has loads of evil Satanic imagery. It's a cartoon but cartoons can be horrors can't they? 217.43.250.66 (talk) 17:05, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

It's not considered "horror" because there are no official sources that officially state that it is "horror". That, and letting one's own personal opinions decide what genre a show is is WP:original research.--Mr Fink (talk) 19:27, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

LGBT-related animation? edit

Should this be considered an "LGBT-related animation" in the infobox? Clearly, the series finale revealed two major characters being in a gay relationship. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2606:A000:EAC2:FE00:D817:936C:E3E6:7C77 (talk) 23:53, 11 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Not the focus of the show. Geraldo Perez (talk) 00:00, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Only a recurring pair of characters are a couple. Not a main theme. Not a notable feature per RS. Just a one-off thing. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 00:21, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Number of episodes in the series. edit

As you may know, Gravity Falls aired Weirdmageddon 3 as a 45-minute special, but that episode is divided into two different ones on reruns, with an extra episode "Weirdamgeddon 4: Somewhere the Woods" (according to different EPGs like DirecTV, Dish or Cox, among others) being broadcast as the other half of the original special. However, in the original airing of the series finale, it was shown the episode's first half end credits, along with its own cryptogram, and then skipped into the beginning of the other half left to air. This shows that the 45-min special was in fact two episodes produced separately and joined only for the finale. Shall we change the number of episodes in the "infobox television" template from 40 to 41? There's no need to add the episode on the episodes' list article. --Bankster (talk) 20:43, 30 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Is vs. Was: Wishful Thinking or Discourse Policing? edit

Hey, thank you for reading! I'll try to make this huge topic quick: assuming Linguistic Prescriptivism to be a social construct and a form of oppression (which is the consensus in Linguistics), I think we can agree that Wiki pages should aspire to language that is most likely to provide the reader with the correct information, whether explicitly (e.g. "Chris Cornell was a singer...") or implicitly (e.g. "Valhalla is the mythological..." - note that here "is" does not confer existence, therefore the argument that "is" vs. "was" is mainly or solely used to infer existence is intuitive but empirically incorrect). I'm aware of the policy on using "is" for fiction but I would like to propose that policy that is implemented blindly is mere bureaucracy and oppression; any policy, like any assertion of authority, must be patently justifiable if we accept Hume. Now, since this show is officially cancelled[1], a regular reader coming across the words "Gravity Falls is..." is extremely likely to infer that the show is still ongoing. I suggest correcting that by using the word that infers it's ended, such as is, which is the relevant information for recent television works. If not, I'm very interested in arguments pro language policing, so feel free to express yourself. Thanks to any reader, Vivaldimort (talk) 00:19, 4 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Article conforms to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Television as it stands now. Proposed changes to that portion of the manual of style should be made and consensus for change gained at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Television. Any local deviation from the manual of style requires a consensus that it does not apply in a specific instance. This article is no different than any other completed TV series or any other completed serial work of fiction so I see no valid way or reason to justify any exceptions to the way we refer to them. Also, the series was not cancelled according to Hirsch in that reference, he should know, he said it completed as per his plans. Geraldo Perez (talk) 01:22, 4 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Oppression. This is by far the most pathetic word to be used as an argument in English linguistics, aside from social construct. World has turned really PC these days. --Bankster (talk) 08:50, 5 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Production edit

The first two thirds of the Production section reads like a generic description of every writers' room in the history of American television. And it's written as if things like "a room reserved for writers" were unfamiliar concepts that had to be spelled out, which hasn't been true since… maybe the Dick Van Dyke Show in 1961?

I have no doubt that it's accurate, and it has a reliable source (an AV Club interview with the showrunner), but that still doesn't mean it needs to be in the article. (I'm sure I could, e.g., find reliable sources to write two paragraphs of generic text about how Rough Draft animates the show the same as every other animated show on TV, but I doubt anyone would want that.) --157.131.170.189 (talk) 06:14, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Bill Cipher page edit

I really think that Bill Cipher should have his own page on Wikipedia. Not only was he the true main antagonist of the show, but he's also grown beyond that and into kind of an icon and spread off into several other shows such as Rick and Morty, Ducktales, The Owl House and probably others that I don't know about.

I really hope that somebody will take note of this and do the right thing.

Writer and director credits in infobox edit

I removed those as number of names is too long for the infobox and it is more appropriate to use the actual episode credits for this information. Also the credits listed were wrong as a number of the credited directors and writers were of teams, not individuals, and this was not reflected correctly in the infobox list. Anyone in the episode list credits with two names separated by an "&" is a team and should always be credited as a team including the "&" whenever listed.
