editThis is factual information. Although the album has not yet been released and will not be for a while, there is a set release date (October 2006) and the title is final. Therefore this article should be kept as it does not break any Wikipedia rules (i.e., "Wikipedia is not a crystal ball") --Scottf9 00:39, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
There is no way this album is coming out in 2006. West said he wants to devote time to being a producer again, and helping out Consequence and GLC with their albums.-- 8 February 2006—Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.27.107.126 (talk) 06:22, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
Release
editThe albums release date has been pushed back to December. At the Brit Awards, Kanye West said that Graduation will be released in December. Sorry I can't give a source for this, but I seen it myself on TV. --213.106.129.20 16:54, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Kanyegraduation.jpg
editImage:Kanyegraduation.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Graduation album cover
editContrary to what some sites are saying, the album cover that is being currently used looks to be official. I don't think Roc-A-Fella would be putting it on their website if it was fake. Cleanup
editSomeone please clean this up. Especially the following two sentences: "50 Cent later stated that he will stop releasing solo albums if Curtis will not sell more copies than Graduation. However, 50 Cent later stated that he will continue to release solo albums even if West were to sell more albums than him." Just remove the first "later stated." Album Leak Information
editOk, There has has been hundreds of adding and removals of this. I think that we should just add that the albums hav ebeen leaked at least untill the official release of the album. It is informative and this is after all an encyclopedia. We can add it and then after the release, remove it. This will reduce the many reverts on this page --¤ The-G-Unit-฿oss ¤ 17:54, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
- No it's not. It's not notable to mention regardless if the album hasn't been released. I have discussed this matter on this page and the Curtis talk page. The edit wars are not necessary. Douglasr007 22:46, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
- Why not? It's notable enough to have several articles on it. -Mysekurity 03:42, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Exactly, Leaks are important in impacting sales and distribution of the album, the leak of the explicit version of Graduation vs clean version of Curtis have a chance in impacting the final number of albums sold, thus it should be included in the article —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.177.58.174 (talk) 13:45, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
- I'm just going to quote what I said before: "The album leak is not notable because it adds no content to the article whatsoever. Every new album gets leaked today so it's nothing special. The only time where an album leak would be added to the article if it caused something in affect of the album. For instance, an album leak could cause an album to release a week earlier than expected would be a notable mention of the album leaking." Douglasr007 12:00, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

It samples "My Song" from Labi Siffre. Aleppo1979 14:36, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes, but someone has changed it back to "I Wonder" by Jack Jersey. Having looked at the lyrics for the Jack Jersey record, I can confirm that whilst the song has similar lyrics to that of the song sampled on Kanye's "I Wonder", they do not include the lines "If you know, what it means, to find your dreams come true", which are included on Kanye's song. Therefore, the sample is indeed "My Song" by Labi Siffre. I have heard the Labi Siffre record, and it is definitely the correct sample. Bigger_And_Better 16:12, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Songwriting and production credits
editThere are a few 'weird' credits, according to the CD booklet:
- "Champion" is only credited to Steely Dan, not to West himself too.
- on "Good Morning" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing" Jay-Z and Young Jeezy are featured as guest vocalists, while their songs are not considered as sampled. I imagine that's because they all record for Def Jam.
- DJ Premier is a featured artist on "Everything I Am", he does not appear in the production credits.

The Times review
editI removed the review from Professional reviews section, because there are at least three reviews of Graduation there: [4], [5] and [6]. The first review gave the album two stars, while the other two gave three. I know there are people out there who want Curtis to have better reviews, but it simply wouldn't be fair to leave that two-star review at least because the other two reviews gave the album three stars. Daniil Maslyuk 13:34, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

"I Wonder" Reference to Stevie Wonder?
editDoes "I Wonder" have a lot of reference to Stevie Wonder? The synth strings at the end sound a lot like the Yamaha_GX1 which Stevie Wonder owns (amazingly) 2 of. There are only a handful in the world, and some would say it's a sound that Stevie really used for characterization in tunes such as "Village Ghetto Land" and "Pastime Paradise". Maybe be a subversive nod, but I thought I would point it out. In 2005, Kanye did say: "I'm not trying to compete with what's out there now. I'm really trying to compete with Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life. It sounds musically blasphemous to say something like that, but why not set that as your bar?"[1] Smd 6710 17:54, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Sales Info From Billboard
editI don't think the sales info for Curtis Or Graduation should be included in the articles as of yet. So Sept. 11 release date they said Curtis was neck and neck with Chesney. A day later they wrote Curtis sold 3x what his album sold first day. According to reports I've read Graduation and Curtis are very close. I.E. Curtis is number 1 on iTunes and Graduation is number 2. I think the first day sales just reflect that more of Kanye's fans pre-ordered the album. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DisDudeIsFly (talk • contribs) 12:32, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Kanye Crushes 50 Cent In Huge Album Sales Week
edithttp://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003642725
Kanye West's "Graduation" (Def Jam) easily leads the star-studded class of Sept. 11 releases, posting The Billboard 200's largest sales total in more than two years. Nielsen SoundScan will show West's album moved 957,000 during its first six days when the tracking service refreshes its charts tomorrow morning (Sept. 19).
Also pumping album volume are 50 Cent's "Curtis" (G-Unit/Interscope), which will lock down the No. 2 slot with 691,000 sold. Kenny Chesney's "Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates" (BNA/Sony BMG Nashville) will bow at No. 3 with 387,000 copies.
The total for West's "Graduation" is the largest by any album since 50 Cent's "The Massacre" opened with 1.1 million copies in March 2005. West's own August 2005 album, "Late Registration," was the last album to surpass 800,000 copies when it began with 860,000.
While West beats 50 Cent in the celebrated clash between rappers, the real winners are music merchants. With the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack at No. 4 selling 133,000 copies, the top four titles alone account for 2.2 million units, more than all titles combined on last week's entire Billboard 200.
West's new album ranks 15th among all sales weeks since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking in 1991. The double punch provided by "Graduation" and "Curtis" also marks just the second time in that era that two albums have bowed in the same week with totals surpassing 600,000 copies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.145.242.71 (talk) 11:02, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

- The section with the competition was copied from the Curtis (50 Cent album) page, and that page was mainly talking about Curtis' charts positions, indeed, someone should re-write this so the page can have more info on Graduation's chart positions. --- Who's the one you call Mr. Macho? Reflist
editThis album has 17 references, which is enough to justify {{reflist}}. Here are some other albums by completely unrelated artists that use {{reflist}} with less references than this article:
All of these are music albums by completely unrelated artists that use reflist. The references are footnotes, and it makes sense that they be included in a slightly smaller text at the bottom. -Mike Payne (T • C) 13:36, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
- {{Reflist}} and <references/> can be used on the same number of references. Its only when there are loads of refs that we start to use {{Reflist|2}} or {{Reflist|3}}. --¤ The-G-Unit-฿oss ¤ 16:25, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Graduation is not 2001. The current format is easier to read, I don't get why you would want to change it to a version that is harder to read? Because those pages use it? So what? --- Who's the one you call Mr. Macho? The head honcho, swift fist like Camacho 16:38, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
- I wasn't inferring that use of <references/> versus {{reflist}} had to be made based off the number of references, but I was defending the point of view that you only need to use reflist if you have a lot of references, to save space. This isn't true. The choice is really a stylistic one, the references are just links to pages backing up the claims made in the article, it's not something that adds any additional content and not something that I can see reading unless they clicked a footnote to go to the link. It doesn't make them harder to read at all, it differentiates the text providing information to the additional text just providing links to where you can look that up. If you're having reading it and you really want to for some reason, you only have to hold CTRL and roll the mouse wheel down, and the font starts instantly getting larger. Then when you're done, do the opposite and boom, problem solved. I do agree with starting to use reflist|2 and reflist|3 when there are a ton of them. -Mike Payne (T • C) 19:31, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
- I agree with you. {{Reflist}} is better. --¤ The-G-Unit-฿oss ¤ 19:43, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Non-free content
editHi- just to let you know that there are a couple of issues with non-free content in this article which should really be resolved before this is ready for GA status. Firstly, the audio samples are of too high a quality- 64kbps should be sufficient. Secondly, the template rationale is not appropriate for the interior album artwork; while the use of the image may well be justified, it really needs a detailed, specific rationale. Thanks, J Milburn (talk) 19:32, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

Good article criteria assessment
editRate | Attribute | Review Comment |
---|---|---|
1. Well-written: | ||
1a. the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct. | Prose is consistently clear, concise and simple. Very little grammatical or spelling errors. Article should (and does) reflect American English where possible. | |
1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation. | WP:MOS is adhered to, e.g. album title is italicized appropriately. The lead is of sufficient length in respect to the whole article length. A consistent style that comprises of detailed narrative that is well-supported by reliable secondary sources is coherent. | |
2. Verifiable with no original research: | ||
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline. | The article features a wide-range of good-quality, reliable sources from well-established news outlets. Claims made in Critical reception are justified. | |
2b. reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose). | Nothing too contentious here and all published-opinion has been referenced. Statistics have been supported from reliable sources, e.g. RIAA. | |
2c. it contains no original research. | The lead needs some citations as it has none, but most of the information provided in the lead is later supported in the main body. | |
3. Broad in its coverage: | ||
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic. | The article's topic is well discussed, even when other albums are discussed, valid comparisons are made with the original article referenced. | |
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style). | The article is very strong in terms of being on-topic and use of summary style, despite being quite a long article for an album. | |
4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each. | Adheres to NPOV well; demonstrated by the inclusion of constructive critical opinion in the Critical reception section, despite being well-received generally. | |
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute. | Not a contentious article that has seen much edit-warring, conflict or ownership and the collection of editors responsible for it have co-operated well. Page has had no need for protection. | |
6. Illustrated, if possible, by media such as images, video, or audio: | ||
6a. media are tagged with their copyright statuses, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content. | All images have valid rationales. | |
6b. media are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions. | Captions are suitable and relevant. | |
7. Overall assessment. | Graduation meets the good article criteria substantially. Its editors have created an article with detailed and factual narrative that is supported by reliable sources. The article contains both image and sound to engage readers and to inform on a much wider-scale than prose. As said earlier, I think it would be helpful to have some in-line citations/references/sources in the lead, to reinforce any claims that may not be clear in other sections and for general ease. Merger proposal
editI propose to merge Champion (Kanye West song) into Graduation (album). I believe that the content in the "Champion" article can easily be explained in the context of Graduation, and despite the album being a GA article it can handle the extra information regarding the sample clearence along with the music video and will not cause any problems as far as article size is concerned. The critics come from album reviews and one independent source covers the music video. MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 11:58, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

"Musical style" section seems to be written subjectively
editAs I was reading the article, I got the sense that this section was written less like a straightforward explanation of the sound and more like a personal reflection, so I added the "essay-like" template to the top of the section. I noticed it most strongly in the second paragraph. I'm new to WP, so maybe this is how most articles on albums with sections like these are written, but it doesn't seem to be written from NPOV. Graduation (album) → Graduation (Kanye West album) – since Graduation (Deen album) an incomplete title. In ictu oculi (talk) 18:49, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose, based on pageviews and long-term significance, I believe the Kanye West album is the PDAB.--Ortizesp (talk) 01:13, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
- Support per nomination. Graduation (album) is incomplete disambiguation and should redirect to Graduation (disambiguation)#Albums. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 08:30, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
- Alternate proposal — we don't typically use partial disambiguation in titles, but: what if we move this page to Graduation (Kanye West album) as its pagetitle but still have "Graduation (album)" redirect to this album? Paintspot Infez (talk) 00:08, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
- That is acceptable (and would be a good way of clearing up the other dozen PDABs) In ictu oculi (talk) 07:23, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
- Since the key motivation for my support vote is that each entry's main title header should not display incomplete disambiguation, I would likewise support Paintspot Infez's compromise proposal in this specific instance as well as in all other such relatively rare instances, per In ictu oculi. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 20:07, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
- Strongly disagree with the primary redirect idea. Either it's a PDAB or it's not. If Graduation (Kanye West album) and Graduation (album) are the same article, why would we keep the unnecessary disambiguation? 162 etc. (talk) 21:46, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Ye's album averages around 1,200 pageviews per day compared to 0 [not a typo] for the Deen album. The hatnote is more than sufficient. Station1 (talk) 10:57, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
