Spiral Staircase edit

We need a citation for this, I think. I've spent a bit of time in Grace, and never seen this. The staircase isn't mentioned in Canon Michael D. Lampen's guide to the cathedral. If we have this only by rumour, we can't include it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bpmullins (talkcontribs) 02:18, 21 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Doors of Paradise edit

The doors weren't washed away in a flood; they were removed to save them from pollution. I don't know if the SF copies were used for the reproductions now in the Baptistery or not. (Three of the original panels are coming to the United States this year; so they certainly still exist.) -- Bpmullins 02:18, 21 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rewrite edit

This article is in desperate need of a Rewrite. That it is User:GreaterWikiholic 11:45 AM, 26 March 2007, (PT)

I agree. Would you like to make a start? If not I'll take a look at it but not for a few days. -- BPMullins | Talk 19:45, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
As archivist of Grace Cathedral, I am working on a complete rewrite of this article. Thank you to all past compilers and editors; I welcome your input. 72.164.169.173 (talk) 22:26, 30 June 2010 (UTC) 22:26, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

What to do with Keiskamma Altarpiece edit

Since the Altarpiece has been removed from the cathedral what should we do with the section here? Should we make it a seperate article. If we do that we fear it might be deleted. So what shall we do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GreaterWikiholic (talkcontribs) 20:57, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

It needs to be removed from the Cathedral article. It should never have been included in the first place since it's not a permanent installation, and Wikipedia's not an events calendar. If it deserves a separate article it can be defended on any AfD that may arise. -- BPMullins | Talk 21:27, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Trivia edit

I removed the entire section. There were three items. One, about a song that mentions the cathedral, was pop culture cruft. The claim about the cathedral's replica of the Ghiberti doors being 'more official' (whatever that means) belongs in the body of the article with the description of the doors if the claim can be supported. I read the Joan Didion essay yesterday. It does mention the cathedral, but it's not really about the cathedral at all - it's about Bishop Pike (and not very complimentary at all).

None of the three really belong in an article about Grace Cathedral. -- BPMullins | Talk 15:14, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Chartres Labyrinth edit

I removed the "cite need" as the web site for Grace Cathedral clearly states that the design of their labyrinth is based on the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres (The Cathedral of our Lady of Chartres - aka Chartres Cathedral). I added a photograph of the labyrinth in Chartres for comparison and added a little text for clarification.

I removed 'carpeted' from the description of the Labyrinth. The labyrinth is now built into the pavement. (Verified on my visit last Friday night. If somebody visits with a camera, a new photo is in order.) -- BPMullins | Talk 17:20, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Name of the church edit

A disputed edit in the lead stated that the name of the church is actually Grace Cathedral Church.

I believe that's actually true - I nodded when I read the change. I recall seeing that on the signboard outside the cathedral. I'm not going to revert the edit at the moment because I don't have support, and my memory may be faulty. If anybody goes past the cathedral, check the signs for us, please. -- BPMullins | Talk 16:07, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cast Concrete Structure edit

Just visited Grace and noticed (for the first time) that it is a cast concrete structure. Are there any other comparable cathedrals, especially modern imitative Gothic cathedrals constructed of cast concrete and rebar?

I am interested in the pipe organ edit

Does any one have any information regarding the pipe organ that was used in the Grace Cathedral? My great grandfather, Heinrich August Emil Barth was a musician, music teacher, pipe organist, voice teacher, and created Barth's Retreat on Mt. Tamopias.

The family story says that Emil, common name, played the largest pipe organ in the world. This was 1885-1906 time period. He lived through the 1906 quake and died in San Francisco in 1926.

Does anyone have any conformation on this information like photos or written history? I can be reached at holc97045@yahoo.com Sincerely, CleoCite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:680:c000:56c1:b082:43d:fe3:5a1a (talk) 22:05, 26 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Organs edit

No information about the cathedral’s organs?  One of them is considered to be G. Donald Harrison’s magnum opus.
