The idea that Gabriel de Castilla discovered Antarctica

edit

The article says that "In 1603, Admiral Gabriel de Castilla, who left Valparaíso to reconnoiter the coasts of Chile, reached the southwest coast, reaching the 64th degree south, discovering the first Antarctic lands", as if it were known fact. Apparently it is just a conjecture. See, for example, the Gabriel de Castilla article, which says "it has been argued" and "historians conjecture" regarding this. The History of Antarctica article similarly says that "it has been argued", and adds that the claim as "not generally recognized".

I don't know anything about this besides what I've read here on Wikipedia over the past few minutes, but it does seem to me like perhaps the article shouldn't state this claim in such factual terms. - Rwv37 (talk) 22:26, 7 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
