Talk:Government spending in the United Kingdom

Quantitative easing

edit

QE has been on the order of £40-100bn a year for the last decade. By its size and regulation (only the central bank can do it, and only with the government's consent) it is clearly a significant aspect of central spending policy, and is an alternative to other forms of spending (because ultimately QE is just as inflationary, even though initially it inflates asset prices, e.g. housing, which are not measured in the headline inflation rate).

Clarification on local authority spending needed

edit

It is not clear whether local government spending is included or not. 'Other bodies' are mentioned in the first part, but it would be better to state whether on not other bodies includes or excludes local authorities. Hewer7 (talk) 11:37, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Update for 2023-24 when?

edit

/* Components of government spending */ I added a link to 2023-24 report from which the figures in the article came. I left the original link which seems to have been updated by the OBR site to point at 2024-25 report, because that will be useful when the article is updated to 2023-24 figures. I guess this section of the article has to be updated annually, but I don't know when that usually happens, and am seeking consensus on doing an update. I am wary of making an edit because I'm new to this page, and don't know the accepted culture, and any edit, given the recent change in government, might be politically sensitive. Why figure for NHS England only

edit

Why does the article state a figure for the NHS England budget, but not for other parts of UK? Or a total UK figure? The £177 billion is budgeted for NHS England failed verification. The only £177 billion figure in the source is DHSC Spending Review settlement for 2024-25. I searched for 176 too in case it was a rounded up figure, but could not find a figure >= 176.5, which would round up to 177. CorsacFoxWiki (talk) 13:01, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
