Currently (8/9/05), the French Post Office has a series of philatelic stamps (10 in all) entitled COUPE GORDON BENNETT.

Maurice Prevost (pilot) won the Gordon Bennet Trophy for France in 1913^{1093 Spad Fighters}. Reference to Itala car being Rosso Corsa removed

The Itala that won the Peking-Paris race at the Museo dell'Automobile di Torino is verifiably painted lead grey, not red.

confused by first sentence

Can anyone improve the language of the first sentence in the article, which currently reads...

As one of three Gordon Bennett Cups established by James Gordon Bennett, Jr., millionaire owner of the New York Herald, the automobile racing award was first given in 1900 in France.

I expected a sentence starting with a phrase like "The Gordon Bennett Cup in auto racing is...", (or "was"?). That's a common beginning for WP articles, including the two linked to here, on James Gordon Bennett and the New York Herald.

I regret my inability to Be Bold here, but I don't understand what the sentence is trying to convey, and I'm completely ignorant on the Gordon Bennett Cup (which is why I came here in the first place). DavidHolmes0 (talk) 13:05, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
