We will speak in detail of Cn. Vergilius Capito in our Corpus cited above. It will suffice for the moment that we say -- in agreement with M. L. Robert (1) -- that this procurator of Asia and prefect of Egypt was indeed a native of Miletus, where he was the first high priest of the temple of Caligula. It would be difficult to understand, in fact, that an imperial official from outside the province was invested three times with the honor of the high priesthood of the province of Asia. (p. 473)
