Spelling variations edit
The term "disc" has an alternate spelling ("disk") which I've included in the anchor; please demonstrate how alternative spellings should be displayed in the text. Also, please declare which form of English spelling will be used in this article. Thanks! Esculenta (talk) 13:13, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
- I've added the alternate spelling to the entry. I have no strong opinion as to which spelling; as an American ex-pat who's spent long years in the UK, I'm comfortable with both! ;) Given that Kazamzam started the article in American English, perhaps we need to continue with that (i.e. changing the disc/disk entry)? Etymologies & more edit
It's been fun and educational adding to this glossary; I estimate it's about half-way completed. How do we feel about adding etymologies? One of the main sources I'm using (Ulloa & Hanlin 2012) gives them for most of their entries, so it would be easy to add & source them here. I'm dreaming of a future WP:FL candidacy, and have been perusing the bird glossary for inspiration. I see its entries are often more substantial (particularly for more in-depth topics that are difficult to summarize succinctly), and it often makes use of "Compare", "See related", and "See also" to suggest comparison to similar topics; I will start using this here too. ... how about terms that don't specifically apply to lichens, but are used frequently in lichenology, e.g. circumpolar distribution, cosmopolitan distribution, Arctic–alpine, etc. ? Esculenta (talk) 17:39, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
- It's looking really good Esculenta! Sorry I haven't contributed much this month; I've been in the wilds of Africa without much in the way of internet connectivity (and PAINFULLY slow connectivity the few days we did have it). Personally, I think adding the commonly used prefixes/suffixes is a great idea, but I wouldn't include the non-lichen terms. We can always link to the appropriate articles there. And a "see also" for common names seems appropriate for the glossary. Will try to add items and/or make comments in the coming week; then I'm off for another couple of weeks in the field.
