Accomplishments edit
Seafloor spreading was not an hypothesis. Continental drift was the hypothesis from Otto Ampferer (1875-1947) and Alfred Wegener (1880 - 1930), that was rejected by many geologists during their lifetime. 22 years after Wegeners death in 1952, when the mid-ocean ridges were first discovered by Marie Tharp on her drawing table and 16 later in 1968 when with the help of the drill cores from the Glomar Challenger the rift valleys were investigated and the age of the ocean floors could be determined, which is evidence for the seafloor spreading, Wegener's hypothesis of the continental drift was confirmed and the theory of plate tectonics was developed from it.
