Rachael Ray edit

Rachael Ray, while certainly a notable person, was not born in, and as far as I can tell never resided in Glens Falls, She did though reside in Lake george. Syberwolff 22:16, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you are right. In fact, it says so on her page : Rachael Ray. By the way, SuBerWolf, I encourage you to make an account, and continue helping with wikipedia. and, you can sign your name with four tildas ~~~~ and a name and timestamp with automatically be generated. Danski14 21:53, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ray's wikipage actually says she was born in Glens Falls. This is actually incorrect, per her official bio page (which also says raised in LG) but the magazine article referenced in the Wiki article says differently. So what should be considered correct? Salamurai 22:01, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Huh, sorry, I didn't even notice that. It's rather confusing. Apparently she was born in glens falls (see IMdB [1]) but was raised in Cape Cod and then New York. There are other sources noted in a discussion of the Racheal Ray page. So, I guess I will revert. Danski14 22:28, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
According to http://www.nndb.com/people/672/000108348/#FN1 rachel ray was born at Glens Falls Hospital. This seems likely as her family has connections to Lake George, her sight may list Cape Cod because this is where she grew up. --Thepreppie 16:30, 20 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
pretty much everyone from warren county/surrounding regions was born at glens falls hospital. myself included. however, i'm not sure this qualifies anyone as being a glens falls native. rachel ray is, i believe, actually from the town of lake luzerne. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.100.229.154 (talk) 04:28:57, August 19, 2007 (UTC)

Her official bio says she was born in Glens Falls and raised in Lake George. (GF Hospital is the closest to Lake George) She wasn't born in Lake Luzerne, but she lives there now.[2] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.67.28.132 (talk) 22:41, August 25, 2007 (UTC)

I don't see the point of listing Rachel Ray in this article just because she was born here. I feel strongly that her birth having occurred in the city's regional hospital (providing services to residents of five counties) is not only non-notable, but it did not have as profound an influence on her life as the municipalities in which she grew up / achieved fame / currently resides. I would think listing her in those articles would be more appropriate. Thoughts? --JBC3 (talk) 06:15, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree with JBC3 that being born in a city is kinda a flimsy reason to list someone. However, I do see the other side of the argument. The Rachel Ray article, right in the first sentence, mentions her date of birth, and place of birth, it then seems kinda weird that she isnt then listed on this article somewhere as well. George W. Bush is on the List of people from New Haven, Connecticut apparently just for being born there (though attending Yale probably helped get him on the list even though its not mentioned). That brings up another thing, what if we start putting every single student that attended a college in a city and went on to be famous in that city's "notable people" list, its basically the same issue as "just being born" there. What constitutes being "from" a place, how long do you have to live there, and if we set up an arbitrary time of say 5 years, what if an author lived in a city for only 2 years but his most famous book was written during that period he was in that city and that city is mentioned in the book in a significant way? Lots of issues come up with different scenarios. This issue might be important enough and cover so many articles that it might want to be brought up at the village pump and discussed by the community at large, or at the wikiproject cities talk page.Camelbinky (talk) 20:49, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Camelbinky. Personally, I hate the idea of mentioning (almost) any natives because I feel it seldom adds much to the description of a place. Rachel Ray being born in Glens Falls is hardly what the city is known for, whereas it may very well be Lake Luzerne's only claim to fame. George W. Bush is one of only 44 individuals to be President of the United States, so his place of birth is perhaps more notable. I can only image what the Hollywood, Los Angeles, or New York City articles would look like with such a list section. I agree that the issue ought to be discussed in a broader forum, but for the sake of this one individual, is there adequate consensus (or lack of objection) at this point to remove Rachel Ray from the Glens Falls article? --JBC3 (talk) 06:04, 1 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
My personal opinion is to remove her from the Glens Falls article unless it can be shown that newspapers, tv, or Rachel Ray herself refers to her as being a "native of Glens Falls" or "from Glens Falls". She's written plenty of books, if in the bio on the book jacket or whatever says "Rachel Ray is from Glens Falls, New York...blah blah blah" then MAYBE that would be a reason to put her here, since that would be something nationally referring to her connection to Glens Falls. But like you said Glens Falls has more to be proud of, whereas Lake Luzerne not so much so I would definitely agree that putting it in Lake Luzerne would be better.Camelbinky (talk) 07:37, 1 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I took it upon myself to undo the revert that put the Rachel Ray entry back into the article. I'd hate to get sucked into an edit war, so I will just post here that I'm the one who did the undo on that edit and hope that others keep an eye on it. Please keep me informed if I can help in any way if this goes to discussion in a broader forum, perhaps wp:Notability/Noticeboard or the wp:village pump (policy) are two places I recommend but I also suggest picking just one, as its easier to communicate and discuss that way.Camelbinky (talk) 01:34, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Submitted to Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)/Archive 65#Lists_of_people_within_articles. --JBC3 (talk) 00:12, 18 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Still in favor of including the "born in" as qualification for inclusion in the article. Like it or not, it's a fact where someone is born not a matter of opinion and is hence something deserving of consideration in an encyclopedic article. Residence is also a fact. Whether someone personally "considers" or "makes reference" to their point of origin or where they have lived is immaterial and unverifiable. Encyclopedias are not about information which people choose or choose not to share, they are about facts. IF RR was born in Glens Falls its a fact which the users of an encyclopedia article can do with as they please, but its not up to editors to decide on the basis of their own opinions if someone is really "from" somewhere. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thepreppie (talkcontribs) 23:15, 8 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's a lot of gray area. As already discussed, just because someone was born in a regional hospital that serves several counties does not make them a significant resident of that city. Also, Wikipedia is not a directory. "Of course, there is nothing wrong with having lists if their entries are famous because they are associated with or significantly contribute to the list topic" (itals mine). Neither Rachel Ray or Joe Bruno (or Charles Reed Bishop, for that matter, another item which you didn't restore) has had any significant impact on or association with Glens Falls, for example. If you list everyone that's famous with a tenuous link the list would get unwieldy fast. Also, how often is Rachel Ray in the local paper? It's not like she's as "known" to locals as Jimmer Fredette.
At anyrate, if you're going to restore persons, please include a reference about their link to Glens Falls. I've fixed Bruno's listing. I've also removed J Allard (see below). Salamurai (talk) 12:41, 9 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I agree Rachel Ray should NOT be on the list, but I have no idea who Jimmer Fredette is... I'd say locally Ray is much more famous locally, she was on the local news (wrgb channel 6 cbs) for years every single day before going nationwide.Camelbinky (talk) 15:02, 9 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Other famous persons edit

regarding the line about DeWitt Clinton Hay: DeWitt Clinton Hay, Listed Watercolorist and Bank Note Engraver in the 1860s I've only found these two references to this artist - [3] and [4] - and neither say anything about Glens Falls. So I took it out. One of these does say he's little known. Anyone wanna find a source?Salamurai 01:35, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

J Allard was born in Glens Falls but actually was raised in Queensbury, NY. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amyjos (talkcontribs) 22:34, 26 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Seems more appropriate to me, then, that he be listed in the Queensbury article. If his mother had been on vacation he could have been born in any number of places and yet had no ties to his birthplace. --JBC3 (talk) 06:03, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Oldest Building edit

The Historic Sites section of this article talks about the oldest building in the city, but doesn't mention which building it is in present-day or where specifically it is located. Anyone able to add that to the article? --JBC3 (talk) 02:16, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

The oldest building in Glens Falls is owned by a local interior decorator. It is called Gallery by the Falls. It is located directly across the street from the Glens Falls Civic Center and below Sawyers Plumbing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amyjos (talkcontribs) 22:32, 26 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Any chance you have a source for that? I've found stuff about an blacksmith shop owned by Calvin Robbins being the oldest building (which may have subsequently become Gallery by the Falls). I just can't find a reliable source. --JBC3 (talk) 05:55, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Suggestions edit

The current section of Culture and media should probably be changed to Cityscape as that is the current name for that kind of section for city articles, see: New York City and Louisville, Kentucky both are FA articles, Chicago and Los Angeles have Cityscape sections, closer to home Buffalo, New York, and there is Grand Forks, North Dakota as an example of a slightly larger city than Glens Falls which has a Cityscape section and is a FA article. I believe in a GA or FA review it would be something that would be suggested, though there are cities that are FA's but dont use that name. Another suggestion, and I made this before, is that the map of GF in Warren County be sent to the graphics lab to be remade in the standard format that is used across most of all US and world "city" articles including those mentioned above and every single US city that has made it to FA status that I have been able to find.Camelbinky (talk) 23:08, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ownership of Post-Star edit

I've deleted that since it's covered in the Post-Star article and is a bit too much information for the article since it's about Glens Falls, not its newspaper. Hanxu9 (talk) 17:03, 10 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
