Article problems, July 2009

I've just done 2 quick edits, one (IMO) good and one kludgy.

First, I removed three paras about Prof Loury's 1987 arrest, to comply with Wikipedia's policies on articles about living people. Why?

• Inadequate sourcing
• Not enough context (eg., no mention that charges were dropped)
• Undue weight
• Disconnected from rest of article

OTOH, I added some info about the arrest to our existing coverage of Prof L's 1987 troubles, adding a NYT news item as a source and dropping the young woman's name.

The second, not-so-good edit concerns how we use the 1995 New Yorker profile of Prof L by Robert Boynton (subscriber-only link). We used it as the ref for the sentence:

An article in The New Yorker during 1995 said that Loury "was emerging as exactly the kind of person he had warned black America to avoid".

which does not fairly represent Boynton's profile, IMO. We also had a "citation needed" for the sentence

Since 1987, Loury has reemerged after reclusive self-reflection as a born-again Christian and repositioned himself as a "black progressive".

Boynton's profile documents that quite nicely.
So, as a quick interim fix, I deleted the "An article in ..." sentence and shifted the ref to the "Since 1987, ..." sentence. What we should do is incorporate more relevant details from the profile into our article. I don't know enough to do it myself. Could someone more knowledgeable step in, please?

BTW, Prof Loury has an op-ed in last Sunday's New York Times, which might be relevant to this article.

Born-again Christian

While what the article wrote is correct, it should maybe be pointed out that Loury says that his beliefs have changed since that time. "murder of George Floyd"

Just an explanation: the link to the article "Killing of George Floyd" was modified to read "Murder of George Floyd". I would caution editors to ensure that their edits conform to WP practices and not violate WP:NPOV by changing neutral terms like "killing" to something like "murder". "Murder" is a legal determination that will be made by a jury, and until that happens, Mr. Floyd cannot have been determined to have been murdered, or even "killed", only that he died. Bear in mind that there have been many similar circumstances in which the legal determination was that the officer did not commit a crime (cf. the death of Tony Timpa), and therefore the putative "victim" was not murdered. We cannot prejudge the results of the officers' trials, and until then they must be afforded the presumption of innocence, just as Mr. Floyd must be afforded as regards the accusation that he was intentionally passing counterfeit money. I agree, Bricology, that "Mr. Floyd cannot have been determined to have been murdered, or even 'killed', only that he died", therefore I think a title more compliant with WP:NPOV would be Death of George Floyd. Bus stop (talk) 21:50, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Current wife?

Who is his current wife? It sounds interesting and relevant because it's an intensely intellectual relationship -- he said that they disagree on many issues, that she supported Bernie Sanders, and that they argue the issues many times. I was just listening to him on this YouTube video [2], where he says he has been married three times. The names of his partners are not encyclopedic if they are not named in our sources. Doric Loon (talk) 15:45, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Coate-Loury model
