Glasgow, Scotland
editI added in the city of Glasgow as obviously this city [Glasgow, Kentucky] has originated from the Scottish city. Evidence to prove this is actually on the Glasgow, Kentucky page; and I quote:
- "The town is well known for its annual Scottish Highland Games."
Having born raise in glasgow kentucky it was indeed named after glasgow Scotland the glasgow in Virginia was to this glasgow kentucky reminded the scotch-irish settlers of rolling hills of Scotland so county name is barren...they hold highland games each spring they come from everywhere to compete in caved toss etc school band is Scotties they wear kilts. Have bag pipes. I'm scotch irish also most all people there are. See Virginia was settled before kentucky and since its just east of kentucky they would settled it first shortly after because kentucky was 1585th after original 13 colonies and was part of Virginia and then became kentucky .Thanks, --Kilo-Lima 19:08, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
- Actually, that is a matter of some dispute, and has been for many years. Some folks in Glasgow insist that the city was named after Glasgow, Virginia, while others say it was named after the famous counterpart in Scotland. Since the city in Virginia was indeed named for the one in Scotland, you could make an arguement that Glasgow, Kentucky is named for the Scottish city, either directly or indirectly. Be that as it may, the Kentucky city definitely celebrates its Scottish heritage, through its Highland Games, its high school band (which marches in full Scottish regalia, with bagpipes), and its city logo. The area was settled centuries ago by Scots-Irish immigrants. In case you're wondering, I'm a Glasgow, Kentucky native, descended from a Scots-Irish family, and marched in the Scottie Band. (Those kilts got to be a wee bit cold during the Christmas Parade.) Realkyhick 20:10, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Music
editI live a few hours away from Glasgow, and many people involved in Kentucky's local music scene - especially metal and other rock music - seem to travel to Glasgow to play and meet other bands. I haven't been able to find out why, though. Can any Glasgow residents put something in the article about the culture and music (and tourism) of the town, for curious neighbors like myself? *Vendetta* (whois talk edits) 17:41, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
