Giro d'Eritrea

Did any of the cyclists in the Giro d'Italia ever participate in the Giro d'Eritrea? Obviously I am only referring to those who competed around WWII. --Merhawie 15:02, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Grand Tours No 2 spot: Vuelta or Giro?

Wikipedia has this to say about the two lesser races of the three Grand Tours:

Giro d'Italia: "It is, after the Tour de France, the second most important stage race in the world."

Vuelta a Espana: "The Vuelta a España bicycle race is one of the three "Grand Tours" of Europe and, after the Tour de France, is the second most important road cycling stage race in the world."

The Giro. In fact for me, the Giro is the best (it has a better route than the Tour, harder climbs, more beautiful scenery and is usually less predictable). I've never heard anyone say the Vuelta is the second most important stage race, I'll edit that out. They all pale in comparison to the Monuments though ;-) Severo^TC 23:28, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

The Giro. The giro is deffinately better than vuelta and in my opinion even than tour aswell!!! The big fame of the tour de france is only due to commercial reasons and to me is really absurd. What is clear from this answers is that attributing second place is clearly a matter of opinion, and so should not be used at all. Kevin McE (talk) 16:38, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Hands up if you have ever....

Hands up if you have ever used the word cyclamen to describe a colour in any context other than this race. (Cranes neck and looks around) Thought not. If the normal English word for the colour of that jersey is violet, and I would contend that it is, then we should ignore a rarely used (outside horticulture) cognate in use in Itaian, and use the word violet. We do not refer to the leaders' jerseys in the Tour de France as jaundiced, verdant or bleached, although these words can describe colours and share a derivation with the French word used. Determining the winner?

Can someone explain how the winner of the race is determined? Is it the rider with the lowest total time? The most stage wins? If a rider wins a stage by a split second, how does that benefit that rider more than the one who finished second during that stage? How does a rider benefit by being the first up a designated hillclimb in the middle of a stage? How does the (presumably narrow) margin of victory in a time trial benefit the one who wins a time trial?

Why do some riders break from the peloton early in a stage when the peloton catches up and passes them most of the time?

Agreed - the history section appears to have been poorly translated/written. Some sources are not in english, makes fact-checking hard to do. Bkmertz (talk) 01:12, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
