Cover Versions

Tom Jones did a cover of this song as well. I don't have the reference here with me, but it should be easy to find. It is to be found, at least, on a 4 disc compilation of Tom Jones songs. It might have been a song he recorded with a "contemporary" band after the "Tom Jones revival" if I may call it like that, in which case it might already be listed here. An absolutely superb version of Gimme Shelter was made by acoustic guitar player Michael Hedges (1953-1997) on the album Strings Of Steel (1993).

I would like this to be added to the list of cover versions.

The page currently states that Ann Wilson covered Gimme Shelter on her solo album Hope & Glory, but this simply not true. There is, however, a <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=5ITCMuDed1M">live version</a> on YouTube with vocals from her bass player in 1995. Lyrics

Who keeps deleting the link to the lyrics? And why, exactly? I'd like a good reason, because personally, I think lyrics are a pretty relevant and useful thing to have when it comes to songs.

If you go back a couple of edits in the History of the article, you'll see that I deleted them last, with an explanation. i.e. that the link was dead and may well have been a copyvio in any case. I can see that the current link is live but the question of its status remains. Wikipedia has a hard-and-fast policy on reprinting entire song lyrics in an article, i.e. you don't do it (snippets are fine to illustrate a point, just as if you were quoting from a book in an essay or review). The question of linking to sites which reprint the lyrics and themselves may be in copyright violation is still debated - at the moment the consensus seems to be that it's okay to link to such sites as long as there's no clear evidence that the copyright owner is actively trying to have them removed - a bit wishy-washy IMO (see WP:SONG and discussion on its Talk Page). Personally I agree with you that linking to lyrics is useful for a song article, but the fact remains that most lyrics are copyright and are reproduced on the net without regard. Uh, since the song had already been released when the concert took place, I think you'll find Altamont had nothing to do with the song's conception; rather they took the name of the documentary on the concert from the title of the song. Cheers, Ian Rose 23:11, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
