Not sure about this article's sources; Major Robert Anderson commanded Fort Sumter. Scott Mingus 03:12, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Found the answer in a bio of Gillmore. His men was struck for the men he commanded in 1863. The article incorrectly asserted that the medal commemorated the first battle of the war battle of Fort Sumter, which neither featured Gillmore not his men. I have since corrected this article.
