Strict definition

A gill is the headwater valley/gully of a stream, not the stream itself; it'd be tautological to say 'Carlin Gill Valley'.
I say this from personal local knowledge - I know; not good enough for Wikipedia! - but it's supported by the cited documentary sources. --Ministry (talk) 15:28, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

W. Sussex A to Z bears lots of gill fieldnames . . .
