I think not. His obituaries were published all over the press.Zigzig20s (talk) 06:18, 1 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Death date

edit

There's a discrepancy in the references about the death date. One reports Friday March 31 and the other Thursday March 30. I've removed the day of the month until this gets resolved. - Mlpearc (open channel) 17:29, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

NYT says "found dead" on Friday, but SF Gate says he died on Thursday. CNN also says Thursday. Dying on Thursday and being found on Friday isn't necessarily a discrepancy. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:34, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanx, I missed that point. So we are in agreement that he died on Thursday March 30. - Mlpearc (open channel) 17:38, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

The one source, which was an early preliminary report, says Thursday, which was March 30, but the later report, which specifically mentions the date, says March 31.68.47.65.239 (talk) 15:20, 7 April 2017 (UTC) Just read the source better, and it says the medical examiner's office said he died on March 31.68.47.65.239 (talk) 15:24, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

The reference states "According to Julie Bolcer, a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office, Baker's death was reported to the agency Friday, March 31", (my bolding) reported and actual death date can be different, seems we're back to current consensus of the 30th. - Mlpearc (open channel) 15:43, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

The reports of him dying on Thursday were done at an earlier date and were preliminary. The source noting his cause of death specifically says he died on March 31. Legacy.com, a website which partners with newspapers and funeral homes to records of obituaries,[1] also claims Friday March 31, 2017 as well.[2]68.47.65.239 (talk) 22:01, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Earlier date ? someone knew he was going to die ? - Mlpearc (open channel) 22:08, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Semi-Protect request

edit

I see that Google has featured Gilbert Baker as a Doodle for 2017-06-02. I think we should semi-protect the page temporarily in light of the heightened publicity. Quanticle (talk) 04:31, 2 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

This is Pride Month (and Wiki Loves Pride!). I don't think we should block anonymous edits unless it proves necessary. —Ringbang (talk) 15:07, 2 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'd argue this is an appropriate precaution to take for any page featured in a Google Doodle, especially one that could be as controversial as this. Blocking anonymous edits would primarily mean that users are accountable for their contributions, and given the vandalism I've seen on other Google Doodle pages, this is probably a good idea. Viewers can still suggest edits on this talk page, since there's no protection here --Dramartistic (talk) 17:15, 2 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Sentence fragment

edit

In the Flag section, the lead sentence of the third paragraph ends "when they became more widely." More widely what? Known? Available? Something else I haven't thought of? Neither citation has the phrase 'more widely' in it.

Irish version of biography

edit

Hello, I have created an Irish (Gaeilge [ga]) version of the biography for Gilbert Baker but cannot add a link to this in the Languages sidebar due to semi-protection. Is there a way we can add this? talk --Réaltaeolais (talk) 16:30, 3 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Réaltaeolais: Hello first bit is that new entries should be added at the bottom of a talk page, unless you are responding to an existing entry. Please read Help:Using talk pages#Starting a new thread. I have moved this section accordingly.
You can add a link for ga:Gilbert Baker at wikidata:Q4081194, which is the Wikidata item for Gilbert Baker (Q4081194). You can also get to it from the Wikidata item link on left of the article page under Tools. On the Wikidata item, click on edit in the Wikipedia section on the right, replace the word wiki at the bottom with ga for Irish Gaelic, then replace the page text to the right when it appears with the Gilbert Baker page name. By doing this, the Irish article link will appear on all the other language articles for Gilbert Baker.
