Talk:Giant oil and gas fields

Can someone tell me what the box means, "This article or section may contain an unpublished synthesis of published material that conveys ideas not attributable to the original sources." It's been two years since I posted articles here - at that time, this box did not show up. It's confusing, because the references for this article actually all do pertain to the topic quite directly. --Austinbirdman (talk) 23:24, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

The box was added by editor User:Carados. I must agree with him, the original parts of the article read more like an essay synthesizing new conclusions from provided sources than an encyclopedia article which reports the sources.

I feel that I must emphasize original parts because several paragraphs of the article aren't original -- they're copy-pasted, in probable violation of copyright, with only minor changes to the opening sentences, from the middle of the report at Paul Mann's site. Those paragraphs should be removed immediately. You can use the references as a source of ideas and information, but not as a source of sentences. -- ArglebargleIV (talk) 23:39, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for not replying sooner. When I tagged this article, it seemed that it was orginal research that cited sources, and that did seem like the most appropriate tag to use. -Carados (talk) 01:02, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanations - I'll try to address them with a revision this morning. I heard Mann give a presentation on this topic in 2006. I'm going to rewrite the sections that come straight from the summary on his research pages (they are in the public domain, not copyrighted, but yes, they ought to be redone by all means). Then I'll try to remove any aspects that sound like syntheses - the heart of this piece is just reporting the work of Mann, Horn, Cross et al., which follows on the well known work of Halbouty in categorizing giant oil and gas fields. So this entry should exist (when complete) as one that reports material from sources rather than one that adds a new synthesis. --Austinbirdman (talk) 14:55, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
