A note

What language is the word "pa'ua?" I assume some polynesian language; note however that Tridacna gigas is certainly not found in Hawai'i.

I am also adding a redirect to Giant Clam from Tridacna. Eventually we should have a separate Tridacna genus page that links to each of the seven (?) species. A colleague of mine works on Tridacs and hopefully she can provide me with the neccessary info/images to set this up.

Clamity

On Hamilton Island, 27 June 2007, a five-year-old boy was injured by a giant clam. The mollusc clamped down on the boy's finger, almost severing it. made a start for you, one thing the reference needs is the title of the article, i couldnt find it on the courier-mail website. also, it would be nice if the article verifies the species as tridacna gigas. --PopeFauveXXIII 08:11, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

yo, i can't do this but

someone needs to revise this page to the last edit before 1/11/2010, which deleted a bunch of info and also seems to be promoting an america's top model contestant - unless the giant clam habitually pursues modeling careers, in which case i apologize to all giant clam-kind.

Fossil of Giant Clam

On Dec.24,2020 I wrote to Jimmy regarding my discovery in Lombardy - Italy of a fossil of Giant Bivalve Clam that is 153 cm. long and therefore it exceeds of 16 cm. the one found in Sumatra in 1817. I have all the necessary documentation that confirm my discovery and also the one of the Mayor(Public Officer) of the small town where I found it that can confirm the length. What actually counts as a "giant clam"?

This article (particularly the lede) seems uncertain whether "giant clam" means the genus Tridacna or the species Tridacna gigas. Meanwhile, Tridacna and Tridacninae both imply that "giant clam" means any member of subfamily Tridacninae. Iapetus (talk) 14:46, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

Common names being weird... In my opinion, we should split this article to the genus and subfamily articles AND change the redirect "giant clam" to "Tridacninae".

• § Anatomy is well-constrained to T. gigas and can be kept as-is.
• § Ecology should in large part be split to Tridacninae, with what's left making references to the Tridacninae article like "similar to other members of Tridacninae...". The image in § Development specifically concerns all Tridacninae.
• § Human relevance should be all moved to Tridacninae. Some bits of aquaculture can be kept, but there are a lot of references to other species of giant clams.
• § Conservation status is written too vaguely and needs to specifically describe T. gigas.
• § Gallery looks acceptable so far, but I can't do identification.
