Synopsis

I've revised the Synopsis section to reflect the discussion among folk song collectors and commentators about this song. There are people who think this is an English song elaborated and altered by Scottish authors, people who think there is an undiscovered Scottish ur-version which has become eroded to produce the two English broadsides and hence the bones of the most widely collected type, and people who think there were probably two different songs which have influenced one another, with some verses being transferred from one to the other and possibly back again. I intend to add a discussion section to reflect that debate.

Herded?

The lyric was changed from "hurted" to "herded" here, with a Danish edit summary, by User:MetalJourn (their only edit anywhere so far) with no source. But Martin Carthy, in his version, uses "murdered" as does mainlynorfolk.info. "Murdered" seems to me much closer in meaning to "hurted" than to "herded". So I have reverted, pending the outcome of any discussion here. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:46, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

I believe the correct is "herded" as in "he didn't herd (/i.e. steal) the cows nor the calfs" - but please correct back if I am wrong. MetalJourn (talk) 18:04, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

The English verb "to herd" has a connotation of "to steal"? Or did when this song was first composed? I've already changed it back in the article. But you are more than welcome to offer sources/ evidence in support of your view. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:50, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
