3 Records edit

I have to question the statement "With these records Genzebe is now one of only three athletes in history to break three world records in three different events in under two weeks, joining Jesse Owens and Usain Bolt. She stands alone as the only one to do this feat in three different cities and meets" on the grounds of WP:OR. I'd like to see a source. Off the top of my head Chi Cheng also made the achievement in 1970. If there are exceptions, then its not a full statement. Trackinfo (talk) 07:57, 22 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Undid the change since the original link is working fine.--Gorpik (talk) 07:40, 9 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

She is Oromo-Ethiopian edit

No need to delete the "Oromo" you colonizers. It is indeed a fact no? So stop trying to wipe out her Oromo existence Leyncho (talk) 01:26, 5 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

There are guidelines in the Wikipedia Manual of Style which must be followed in all articles. These guidelines include a specific paragraph, under MOS:ETHNICITY, that instructs NOT to include ethnicity in the article lead, just nationality. This does not mean that it cannot be included in the article; it can be mentioned in the appropriate section, as it is now. You can read that the very first line in the very first section after the lead reads: Genzebe Dibaba is a member of the Oromo Ethnic group from the high altitude Arsi Zone of the Oromia Region and comes from an athletic family. This is perfectly fine and pertinent, and it is included in the right place of the article. It just should not be included in the lead, according to the Manual of Style guidelines.--Gorpik (talk) 07:35, 5 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

K. Thanks for the concise response response. Appreciated. Leyncho (talk) 13:17, 5 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I just read and it says the following:

"Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability"

"Generally should not" is not an automatic disqualifier and it says "unless it is relevant to the subjects notability" in which case I'd argue it is as she's notable as being an Oromo runner in Ethiopia. Thoughts? Leyncho (talk) 13:27, 5 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Her notability comes from her activity as athlete, which is independent from her ethnicity. Ethnicity is not usually relevant for notability. An example of a person whose ethnicity is relevant for his notability is Tadesse Birru. But this is not the case for athletes, in general.--Gorpik (talk) 08:05, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ok I will copy paste the response I gave on another page. Tell me what you think when you have the time. I won't revert your edit this time and instead will just wait for your response. User:Gorpik
On the Nikola Tesla page, this same exact topic was discussed intensely to the point some administrators I'm guessing took action and locked it where his ethnicity is placed in the lead. "Serbian-American". There is nothing different about Nikola Tesla that would warrant his ethnicity from inclusion and not this particular person as well as these other athletes ethnicities. Therefore it is safe to assume my conclusions and interpretation of the MoS guidelines are correct and will be upheld by administrators in any event where it leads to that point as well. Here is a direct link to that talk:

First, the edit summary is there for anybody who reads it later, not specifically for you. This way, anybody who comes to this article later and sees that edit summary knows that there is a discussion here. Second, the discussion in the Nikola Tesla page only refers to that page, it is not a general guideline. But I've grown tired of this discussion.--Gorpik (talk) 07:06, 9 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
