Talk:Gatehouse (waterworks)

Origin of name? edit

'House' is pretty obvious, but why 'gate'? Is it because of the use of gate valves? -- in which case this should be mentioned in the article (and a 'see also' back link added there). EdJogg (talk) 12:28, 29 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Good point. I'd think it refers to any "contrivance for stopping or regulating the passage of water" (OED defn. 6b), but more specifically to a sluice gate. Presumably the plumbing term gate valve comes from the more general term. I'll add something to the article. --Macrakis (talk) 13:25, 29 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
That simple change is all that's needed to answer the question! (Thanks) -- EdJogg (talk) 13:37, 29 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Duplicate? edit

I think this article and Outlet works are very similar and a merge should occur.--NortyNort (Holla)

I carried out the merge (proposed since May 2012)--NortyNort (Holla) 20:33, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
