Talk:Gargiulo's Italian Restaurant

How many Gargiulos from this family are there?

edit

Just wondering how many of us there are?

My dad had five children. We were 23 cousins in this branch from the owner's Uncle John and Aunt "Rosanelle" (she died on December 8, 1967 I think) who had 10 children survive to adulthood. We are pretty much all in our late 40's and older now. Some have even passed away all ready like my cousin John Sotomayer. My uncle Julio, John's dad, was married to my aunt Camella and he disappeared one day. How many others are out there?

Does anyone recall a story about Cousin "Goo Goo" (my dad) who ate a gallon of ice cream the night the priest, who was all of their uncle, visited? Why was the priest visiting that night? Who was the aunt up on 3rd Avenue in NYC? Since my grandmother and grandfather were too closely related that Aunt would have been related to the Gargiulos some which way. Does anyone know of the names of our great grand parents left in Sorrento? Someone please let me know if there is anyone left who knows this stuff. Being a "change of life" baby by the time these questions came up there is no one left to tell me. My dad was always so proud to tell us about his cousin Mike, who worked on the Macy's Parade, but never allowed us to go to the parade for fear there were just too many people around. My dad had a lot of respect for Mike.

I didn't ever get to meet Mike.

My paternal grandparents bought property in Ulster County, NY which one of my cousins still owns. It was a hunting lodge with 18 acres. Maybe someone recalls the 50th wedding anniversary my grandparents had there in the 1940's sometime. You may have heard stories of a relative who attended.

Since my dad's first name was Joe (Joseph) people always mistook him for Joe Garagiola. He never would correct them because he thought it would ruin their day to think they did not actually meet Joe Garagiola. My mom always got so mad at him. She thought it so dishonest. Well sometimes hotels did give us complimentary stay or dinner or something because it was Joe Garagiola.

My Aunt Julius (we called her Julie) could curse a person out something fierce. It was her way of combining the explatives that was sort of an art form. She was a construction contractor in the 1930's. Go figure about women's liberation. She may have invented that. Her most memorable stories to me were of having her son at home then getting up to make dinner. She used her broom handle to hit the ceiling to alert the apartment above her. Someone came down and helped her clean up but then she got up and went right back to everyday life.

If my aunts had a special occassion they would do things like order furniture use it then send it back. They thought nothing of buying really expensive clothes, wearing them to a party or wedding, then returning them the day after the event. These kind of family lore make youu kind of strong in a way. You know that nobody can beat you with colorful weird stories about family.

Do you have some stories about some colorful Gargiulo you are or are related to? Since I have too much time on my hands maybe you can write it here to me.

How many others of us are listed in the Who's Who books? I am listed in Marquis and Biltmore's.

Why don't you shout it out here? We Italians dominated the world for hundreds of years. Must be something to us. If there all ready is a thread of this conversation going on someone please point me there. --Piatoo (talk) 23:21, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
